Hi all, thought I’d start a post about my T4 Multivan. So over the years I’ve owned quite a few camper vans - T4s, T5, Vito and some weird miniature Fiat camper van that I can’t remember the name of. Along came kids and mortgage and I ended up driving around in a Megane Grande Scenic for quite a few years (which is actually a cracking car). I’ve always wanted a genuine T4 Multivan so when I saw a low mileage Multivan on eBay it immediately sparked my interest - only problem was that it was in Wick, Scotland....and I was in Essex over 650 miles away The Multivan didn’t sell and after a few weeks the price dropped by £2k so after speaking to the seller I arranged to fly from Southend to Edinburgh, met him in a car park and returned 8 hours later with a Multivan :-) These pics were after I’d completed a full exterior and interior detail - the van was pretty much spot, totally original and just in need of a decent clean. The only issue I was aware of was a bit or rust around the screen - a common issue with T4s and something that I’ll come to later. I’ve got a load more photos of work that I’ve done since which I’ll post up in a bit

Next job was a full service and cam belt. Got a local garage to do it as I didn’t really have time or space. When I picked the van up it was really sluggish to start - the garage said it needed new glow plugs which was a bit suspect as it was starting fine before. A quick Google revealed the likely issue to be the fuel pump timing. The garage seemed pretty clueless so I did some research, purchased the correct timing kit with DTi and stripped it down and refitted the belts on my drive. That was Xmas 2019 - roll on lockdown and started a few more jobs! Whilst giving it a wash I hit the wheel arches with my jet wash which revealed a couple of minor bits of corrosion which if not dealt with would be problematic in the future. Aswell, the underside of the van was solid but had quite a bit of surface rust, the wheels were really rusty, as was the rear X member and spare wheel carrier. Next job was a strip down of the rear end, jet wash, wire brush, rust treatment and seal. I used Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80 on the rusty areas and bits, followed by Dinitrol brushable sealer then a coat of Dinitrol brushable underseal. Pretty impressed with the Dinitrol products, went on well and still looking good. As lot of the bits were hidden by the rear bumper I gave them a coat of black paint to provide some extra protection.

Moving swiftly on - the sliding door runner had never been cleaned and was full of curse word. It was that bad that when I cleaned it out I ended up taking a lot of the paint off so the next job was to repaint the door runner. As with most things once you start poking you end up finding more jobs that need doing. So on my drive I ended up painting the B post, fuel flap area and sliding door runner. More hydrate 80 and rattle can paint job, came out all right apart from the usual paint match issues with VW R902 white. Fitted a new sliding door seal aswell, was a complete pain in the ass to realign the sliding door, took me a good couple of days to get it to shut properly. So as we moved into winter I decided to look at a couple of areas that needed doing. Had a few quotes which varied wildly from £600 - £2000.....so I decided to do it myself, which leads us onto where I currently am with the van....more pics to follow

That's a really clean looking van - very nice. Cheers, it was a bit of a find considering the condition and mileage of most T4s these days - 21 years old now!

Lovely looking van Interior works for me. I’ve had the full on camper before but you lose so much space to the cupboards and wardrobes, this layout is ideal for us. We use it for days out all the time and camping trips with an awning attached to the side. The rear seat is on runners and can be easily removed so it can be used as a van.

Wasn’t entirely sure how to tackle the rust around the screen, I had found a front body cut if needed but wanted to avoid having to do any welding if possible so I’d thought I’d try some Deox Gel from Bilt Hamber. Wasn’t that impressed after the first coat but after some research it seemed I needed to do a few more applications. These photos are after 4 applications - first 2 were at 5-10 degrees, the 3rd and 4th coat were in a heated garage - I also wire wheeled and sanded as much rust out as possible between the 3rd and 4th application. I’ve since done another 2 applications and pretty much all of the rust has gone now, got some deep pitting but luckily it’s still structurally solid. The Deox Gel is really good but does take time to get good results, it’s really easy to work with, just apply, cover with cling film, leave overnight, wire brush and wash off.

So final update for now and pretty much where I’m up to at the moment. Had some rust around the top of the B pillar, have already given it a go with the Deox Gel with good results, will give it a couple more coats to get all the rust out, the gel works well in tight areas like this. This pic is before the Deox was used. Had a few spots of rust on the B post so stripped the paint off and again used the Deox Gel - I did buy a replacement panel for the lower section of the B post but it’s looking like the Deox will save it. I had previously treated the rust on the B post with Hydrate 80 6 months ago so it was disappointing that it had come back. Had a few bits of rust on the arch and sill, original plan was to treat and paint but once I started digging I found some holes. Was going to do some patch repairs but after some advice on here I decided to remove the arch and sill completely. I have new inner arches, outer arch and sill to fit. Although a bit more time consuming, overall easier to just replace the whole lot. In a previous life I was a qualified panelbeater so nice to be able to continue to use the skills I learnt all those years ago :-) So where I’m up to is that both arches and sills have been removed, some rusty areas are being treated and I’ll hopefully start welding after Boxing Day. Will post some more pics of the progress as I go[

It looked great before you unwrapped it, and it doesn't look too bad after it either thankfully this little bit of remedial work right now will save you lots more in the future and ensure the value of your van remains high. looking forward too seeing the rest, best of luck with it all

I didn’t buy it as an investment but pretty sure it will only go up in value from now on

Nice to see you are preventing the rust before it gets really bad.
