My car is set up for a is200 6 speed gearbox, but i want to change the engine type. Now ic an get another is200 box for £100, and i want to adapt it to a duratec engine.
Now i know you can get adapters for rx8 boxes, but everyone seems to have either the box and no clutch arm, or stick, or they seem to want silly money for them. So i am thinking, for the £200-250 that id spend extra over the is200 box , could i adapt one myself to fit?
We have a cnc laser cutter at work, and i am thinking if i can get the dxf files if there are for the bellhousing pattens, i can merge them. Does anyone know if this info is available or how to go about doing this conversion? thanks!

This video might help:
I doubt you will be able to just find the right DXF files, you may need to take measurments yourself.

I was going to suggest the same video. The guy is very skilled and explains well.

MDF is great for proof of concept trials......
Easy to work and available in many thicknesses....

Can you have the parts 3d scanned then overlay them to create an adaptor plate? Especially with regard to getting the crank and gearbox input shaft bang in line. I never really thought about it before and have seen plenty of homemade plates but on other threads people have pointed out that even slightly out of line and you will be putting massive loads on the engine and gearbox bearings leading to failure.

thanks for the replies.
well, having a chat with brother DarrrenW and he recons that if i take pics of the engine/box, then put it into his cad type program, and then cross reference to actual measurements we can get it really accurate. I thought id need a big scanner and then put the sizes onto that, but maybe not! Then hopefully we can make a dxf file i can take it into work and get them to run it on the cnc laser.

If you do it that way make sure everything is bang on square to the camera, it's easy to add in some distortion by accident, a quick way of checking is to have known dimensions and keep comparing the photo dimensions to those.

And you will still need to centralise the input shaft, in the video he turned up a spacer, I used 4 equaly spaced steel shims.

thanks, the dimensions will be checked defo ...
the input shaft will be in the pic, i can just measure from the center of it to outer points.
this is all theory atm, but it worked for making an adapter for the mini i have for the Lada spi unit!

Are both sides perhaps a standard SAE bolt pattern? As long as the holes for the locating pins are bang on in relation to the input shaft and the bolt holes are close enough, the accuracy of the rest of the shape doesn't matter that much I suppose. I would definitely follow vitesseefi 's advice and do a trial in MDF.

ive thought about this now, and i went to buy a is200 box, and when i got there it was full of water! So, looked at the rx8 one again, and from what i gather, its only the output shaft that is the problem to me, but i may be able to swap a is200 one for the rx8 one, as in it may jsut clip on the end. then with the duratec the is200 clutch would have been too big, the rx8 takes the ford one i already have. so its just an adapter plate of the two welsh lads. thanks

well. aparently so, however, i think you need a mx5 flywheel and clutch, i think the starer is on the exhaust side then too, the engine in the mx5 is over by 10 degs, and also, they arnt £150, they are more like £350! everyone with fords wants them now it seems.

just watched teh vid, and watched part 2, i hadnt watched part 2 as i saw the first one and thought when he aligned to the crank with the roughly placed round blocks i thought it was a little rough. But now ive watched teh second part and saw the superglue part, i fancy a go.
as i say the mx5 boxes seem to be £350. The rx8 seems a little scarce too. The is200 is in the car so i don't have to adapt the prop which is different to the rx8/mx5, and the is200 box is maybe £130-150. Will price up having a go. thanks
