I'm picking up a v. old Epco trolley jack at the weekend. Clearly I'm not nuts enough to work underneath a car supported by a jack. However, I've seen stands which go under the tyres of the car once it's jacked up. I've got axle stands, but they don't go as high as I want the car to go. The stands I've seen are roughly the dimensions of two milk bottle crates (or beer crates) on top of each other.
Has anyone seen anything like that for sale? I've had no luck so far.
I'm pretty sure that If I do get 8 milk crates and put two under each wheel it might get ugly. Having said that, we're talking about a Standard 10 rolling shell, so not exactly a heavyweight.

The ‘usual’ way to do what you suggest is buy a few lengths of 2x4, chop into foot long lengths, then screw together stacked up into a ‘box’. Super solid but pretty cheap.
I’ll go try to find a pic.

Stolen off the interwebs. This way is fairly safe as they’re self-chocking, and don’t slip on concrete.

Or even cheaper scrounge some free pallets from somewhere, strip them into their component parts, and nail the cut pieces together. Sometimes you can even reuse the pallet nails. Many things at our place are built from pallet timber.

I have a ton of old roof joists, quite a lot of welding to do on my inner sills and am now pondering how lovely it would be to have an extra 18 inches of headroom under there.

I started collecting steel wheels that people are offering for free every now and then. I welded three together stacked upon each other.
One of these triple stacks for each corner/wheel.
Theoretically I could stack three 16"s + three 15"s + three 14"s + three 13"s, do that on all four corners and get a decent height to work upright under the car.
But I rather built me a rotisserie for under car work.

The answer to your question is that it will be fine. I have for the last few year put my Vauxhall PC straight six up on similar stands with no problem.

Yeah you can easily put a full weight motor on there, even a big american. The timber is so close together it can take some serious weight.
