I am looking to put a different engine into my bmw. i am looking into either a c20xe which i think are all too old now, cost too mcu, and need a rebuild, or there is the st150 engine.
i have heard all sorts of things about them, but id like to hear from someone who actually has some experience with them please.
Id liek to have around 160+ bhp, and it to be reliable. has to use the standard injection system too.

They're cracking engines. Worth buying a cheap one and rebuilding it as they suffer from piston ring issues same as any Duratec and burn oil. Parts are cheap as chips and they're the easiest engine to tune that I think has ever existed.

so if i go for a 2000cc, its the st150 engine ive been told to look for. Is there a code for it? ive seen a few on ebay for £400, but my mate says that s strong money.
to make it rwd, i thinking about a mazda box, or a conversion to rx8 box. My car has a is200 box in it now, apparently the rx8 one is from the same family

Yeah £400 is a lot. ST150 is the best engine to get as they have a better head than other 2 litre versions. The other option is NC MX5 (same good head but with VVT inlet) but they're usually a bit more expensive. I've got a couple in stock at the moment but they're fresh builds so might be a bit expensive.

oh i see, i think its the st150 motor i want, keep it simple, ill be using my microsquirt too.
there is a few on again ebay with bottom end rattles, or piston slap, is that a weak point ? ive been told if they havnt had the right oil or changes often enough, they can have issues with bearings.

Yeah, the rings are curse word so they burn oil then they do big ends in when people don't keep them topped up. Once they're rebuilt they don't have the issue again for some reason.

one lad i know said that he put one in a e30 , never again he said he had bad issues with the crank, but maybe it was his sump or something?
do you run them in rwd format?
ive bought a caterham inlet that ill get an adaptor plate to turn it upside down, then not sure yet about the box and the flywheel.
I'm hoping the engine will make a difference too as itll be a lot lighter than the b230 int here now..

Most I build are for MX5s so rear wheel drive. You can convert a ST150 engine to a RWD MX5 sump setup but there are a few bits that need to be swapped.

is the sump on the back on a mx5? I'm not sure what my mate has used in his escort, but its the same type of set up for the bmw i think.
is it better for me to use a mx5 engine then? thanks for the help!

The MX5 is sort of in the middle. You'd need to either control the VVT or deactivaye it if you use a 2.0 MX5 engine.

ah ok, thing is, if i spend out on the duratec, itll still be worth money, so its not the end of the world. so maybe one of those is it rally design or what ever sumps is in order.
the volvo one thing i need to do is a sump, so its not free, but its something i had to do anyway.

There was also a 2.3 RWD version in Transit, 145ps in std form but I can't imagine it would take much to get 160+ oit of it.

I can't say too much on here, having seen how engines are assembled. Let's just say the pistons and ring gaps especially will be gapped better on a bench over an assembly line. It's common to see grades of head gaskets and big ends on a manufacturing line, but less so with piston assemblies. After all, if you are chucking out many engines an hour, it will take time to gap them right etc.

The Duratec HE can go to almost 200BHP without touching the internals. It does get expensive mind you, but it's never wrong to have an ITB'd 4 pot either .

just looking ito this a bit more, the duratec is looking quite expencive.
Now the 2000cc zetec looks fairly cheep to put in the car. Is that a bad engine?
id have to use teh standard inlet manifold with it, so rwd also, i know they get them in escorts ok , but not sure how,

What exactly is looking expensive?
Zetecs are not a bad engine by any means. These are however slowly going up in value. As CVH blocks crack, Zetec blocks are being converted to use in their place by a couple of firms for example.

right, the big expence of the duratec is the sump but ive been told you can use a ford ranger one, but i hear that is only from america....
Also, to to convert the duratec to rwd, the inlet they use is the caterham turned upside down, and its legal for road rallies now, but not sure about the future, so not sure what you could do then.
