Conclusion of the reverse light saga. The switch was there but not wired in. Found the switch loom under the dash. Pulled the black sheath off the cable to find one of the wires had broken. Used some spare green cabling from the unwanted A/C loom to extend, then routed the cables through an existing bulkhead grommet down the transmission tunnel. The box vent pipe was missing too so used some old rubber pipe and a generic mini breather filter and routed that up into the engine bay (new ones are £40!!) Also stripped out the gear lever and fitted some new tufnol (retro resin composite...bloody pricey) washers and bushes. Shift is now a bit slicker especially as the Thackeray washer is now in the right place (basically allows a tiny bit of cushioning as you pull back on the stick)

A quick brush with a scotchbrite pad would make the lens a bit more opaque too.

Really enjoying this - a thoroughly good solution to each problem found. Totally agree with buying in bits to sort out the reg-number lights etc etc.

Really like your approach to this E type. Keeping the character that it has earned over the years, and wears with pride.
Good work on not shelling out on over priced tat too!
Bookmarked.

New repro factory gear knob. Not a fan of the wooden one it came with.

This is really coming along brilliantly, Loving the quality of your work and also the innovative efforts to "re-make" parts instead of paying through the nose for pattern / replacement parts, Can I ask, do you intend to keep the original glass fuses ?? Nigel

Nigel The fuses aren't the issue. The fuse boxes being internal are ok too, as they don't suffer corrosion. Problem is cheap quality fuses. Not sure who supplies decent fuses though.

Isn't the fuse board being binned for a blade one anyway? .

Alternator and bracket off to get the pump out. It's looks to be the original Repton unit from 69. Repton were based in Smethwick, Birmingham. Pump bearing actually not too bad. Whole area needs a good clean up before new pump goes on.

This sucker is the alternator, power steering pump and Aircon pump bracket. It weighs 4kg. I was gonna bolt it all back in but it's a real pita to get the pump bolts back in as the bracket uses the same fixture points/bolts. (Plan was to fit the lightweight alt at a later date). Does mean I'll have to dig out the lightweight denso alternator and relocate it, and do the regulator rewire as the Jag runs an external/separate regulator. Can't relocate the original alternator as the alt fan will run the opposite way and not cool it.

I have a spare 18ACR you can borrow in the interim to get it put in swiftly if you want.

Slight change of plan to reuse the Jag alternator. Needs the fan replacing so it cools the windings correctly in the reversed (normal) position. Dug out an old mini acr alt and stripped the fan off which fits nicely. Saves me a job(and worry) rewiring to convert to an integrated alternator. Acr fan is smaller but then again the Jag windings will be in the airflow as it'll be forward facing.

Unbolted the 2 pulleys attached to the crank damper. Cleaned up one and refitted it with some shorter bolts. Loosing the redundant Aircon and steering pump pulleys off the crank and water pump has shed 2kg of weight.

Having made an emergency copper pipe as a keep the car on the road many years ago and had issues with the rubber pipe coming off under pressure - what you did there with the olives - very clever
