I'd noticed the gearknob, the fact that the ashtray stays closed and also the comfort seats. BEST seats I've ever had in any car bar non. As mentioned above , loving your work.

I never knew that the ashtrays are tempermental - I've never used them The seats are superb - there is so much adjustment (all electric motors - even the headrests rise and fall on elctric motors and best bit is it all works quickly and quietly) If money was no object and time not an issue I'd put a new seat foam on the drivers side base - I think the first owner was a little "larger frame" than me - there is no wear on the leather but the foam has lost it's shape a little As mentioned above , loving your work. My biggest issue is not knowing when to stop..... Finally found the bloody car phone (was stored as safely as the key buttons) - it's also suffered a bit when in Spain - it's been on my ebay search list for 14 years to hopefully find another Motorola 8700 but not seen one for ages but a few people are having post Xmas clear outs so might be able to fix that as well

Re the phone, managed to get my last one working with an O2 sim card in the phone unit in the boot. Gotta stop watching this thread as keeps reminding me how much I loved my old one and the reasons I should not have sold it....

Gotta stop watching this thread as keeps reminding me how much I loved my old one and the reasons I should not have sold it.... The set up on this one is a bit odd. The earlier cars had a fixed phone with full sized sim card in boot module On this one the sim card is credit card sized and goes in the phone there is no facility to put a sim in the module in the boot as result you can take the phone out of the car when you leave and it still works as a phone Last time I had it working I was on a Vodaphone PAYG credit card Sim - I tried a few networks which didn't work but the Vodaphone one worked fine - It has to be a std sim card on a credit card sized base - I'm just not sure where I put it!!! Anyway it's another thing on the list to fix/resolve before sale

The list to buy this will be far too long for me to add my name to (as much I would love to).
That sadness aside, this has been a fascinating thread of determination and tinkering. Whoever does end up with this better look after it. I'd keep it forever. But then, I'm a sucker for a saloon, especially an E38, which is peak BMW.

especially an E38, which is peak BMW. Fully agree. This shape 7 series definately is one of the best proportioned cars ever made. I can almost always find something I don't like in the styling of any car (I trained as a car stylist & also have strong OCD tendancies) but these are just spot on. Ian, very best for the sale of this fine beastie - based on all the work you are doing to it, it will be a bargain for the new owner! It even made me tempted & whilst the insurance is a lot less than I thought it would be (& actually really rather reasonable), I cannot justify the cost of maintaining & fuelling such a machine especially with a 40 mile a day commute on narrow country roads over the South Downs.

Right I think this is one of the last jobs left to do Rocker Cover Gaskets - one of them was leaking - occasional wafts of oil smell on hot exhaust distracts from the driving pleasure - couldn't remember which one so bought both sides inner/outer and all the bolt seals Passenger side first - Rocker cover removed Having got the rocker off - it all looked a bit scabby in places so I did a quick rattle can refresh (I might regret this as it took a while to prep paint and dry) Gaskets fitted and all buttoned back up Drivers side one next I was at this stage regretting painting the passenger side as the leaky gasket was definately the Passenger side!!!!! After it was all back together I was glad I did give the rocker covers a refresh even if it did mean the job took twice as long And a load of scrap gaskets for the bin Had a bit of a panic when I started the car up - could hear a massive air leak but I'd missed connecting up the vac supply to the brake servo..... Still quickly and easily resolved

I didn't think that was even possible these days with computerized MOT's This is what I normally describe as a "snowball" - I had the parts to do the suspension arms and ball joints so figured I may as well fit them....... seeing as I've replaced all of them I should have fixed the classic 7 series shimmy (which is really obvious on 18's and hardly noticeable on 16's with balloon tyres - I'd ran the car for most of the 14 years on 16's - when I fitted the 18's back well it was horrid) It's a slippery slope from this point onwards You, sir, are a cut above the low life Arthur Daley types. Glad you are enjoying it - as far as selling cars once a decade it's mainly because I find the whole selling experience a nightmare and in general unless it's something special cars are worth more in bits than they are complete I have to break this one next when the 740 issues are resolved It's a 2001 230 SLK manual and it's riddled with tinworm and had an intermittent brake issue - it occasionally applies the brake to one wheel when your foot is nowhere near the pedal - I'd rather not sell something that tried to kill me Engine and gearbox are bloody great shame Merc cut so many corners in terms of rust proofing Also glad there is a waiting list as this is a proper bargain. I think there are several people in that boat too

I was on the lookout for one of these a few years back but ended up with a E55 AMG w211 A Mercedes V8 is on my bucket list - mainly for the sound they make when allowed to breathe a little more freely - I'm not sure what BMW did with their V8's they don't sound very good when they are "less silenced" - I did read somewhere that they didn't want to alienate their 6 pot buying base but that could just be an internet old wives tale but having heard a few with mid box/back box deletes they don't sound very nice at all to my ears

I was sorting out some paperwork and service history ready for when I sell it (after I've got my plate off it)
I've done exactly 22,270 miles in 14 years - average of 1578 miles a year
(OK it has been off the road for 6 years - call it 8 years and an average of 2,784 miles a year)
In that time I've averaged 22.8 mpg (that's bloody impressive considering when I used it daily my commute is less than 4 miles)
I've burned thro £5,031 in Fuel (4,480 litres) Average of £1.12 Per litre

Ahh finally found the alignment settings - I keep a few plastic 25 L water containers for adding weight as required for full alignment checks)
I need to make up
2 x 68kgs on Front seats (Centrally)
1 x 68kgs on Rear seat (Centrally)
1 x 21kgs in the boot (centered)
Full tank of Fuel (So that's a bit of a git as it's way over £100 of fuel to put in a car I'm selling)
I'm tempted to increase the boot weight and rear seat weight to compensate for the current low fuel level)

I don't know why I even think about trying to work out what weight to add to compensate for the low fuel level - you all know I'll brim fill the tank!!!!
