Hi folks, I've recently turbocharged my MK1 mx5. At the moment it has a nasty cone filter. I'd like to replace it with an OE airbox from something - but it'll need to be something big and flat. Anyone have any thoughts what might fit in this space?

Nothing wrong with a decent quality CDA type filter if you can fit one in the space. You want to be able to go to a walk around scrappy really but not exactly easy these days to find one or do it in this current climate. Trying to think of something that would work otherwise and can’t think of anything that isn’t a big obscure shaped specific lump.

Mk2 golf has a flat filter but the air box is more boxy rather than flat. Depends how much depth you have.

Grab some cardboard, tube and tape. Find a suitable sized air filter to fit a popular model that's cheap, that then gives you the benefit of accessing some think like a K and N version. Make a mock up and ask on here if someone can custom build one. Don't forget lollipop sticks to mock up the brackets.

What does the original airbox look like? I use an MX5 filter in one of my cars (not the airbox though) and it looks about the same size as the space you have there.

Another option is to keep the cone filter, but build a sort of air box that fills the space you highlighted, and seals against the bonnet. Was quite a popular way to get a good cold air feed for Mx5 turbos back when I was into them. Here’s a random google image result of the sort of thing I mean.

It'll need to be something big and flat. Anyone have any thoughts what might fit in this space? As others have said a CDA would work well in that space But if you want the OEM vibe then maybe a Mk4 Golf air cleaner housing. Dunno if the dimensions would fit but they're pretty cheap. linkOr if you want to be a little bit alternative, a mower airbox. Again, no idea of dimensions. link Cheers AL.

Hi everyone, thanks for the suggestions Have contacted a few sellers for dimensions, and not a lot looks like a good option fit-wise. The standard filter - the back end sits where the turbo is now. If all else fails, I'll brush up on my CAD skills and get something 3d printed using a generic filter element

How about a Classic Mini late-model injection air filter housing? They are pretty flat although you'll need to figure out how to attach it. (generic pic from eBay)
