I got a bit more information on the 205. The seller apparently did a few bits when he first got it in 2013 - cam belt, cam cover gasket, silencer, oil change, some brake pipes - some other bits he cannot recall. He also did a few bits to get it through its MOT this year - mainly just freeing off brakes, adjusting handbrake, changing bulbs, and sorting an emissions fail by adjusting the carb.
Quick query - how much would you trust a 7 year old cam belt with no miles on it in a car that has been dry stored. Past its best on age alone or liable to be trusted for the short term?

For the sake of a 25quid belt, I'd prioritise the cambelt replacement as the first job. Currently have a 207 on my ramp at work that the belt shed about 13 teeth off of. 3 bent valves and each piston with a small nick in. And that was belt failure on attempting to start on a cold morning

Yes good point, I suppose my concern was how straightforward a job the belt was. As mentioned my skills are very amateur and I might have otherwise chose to start with easier tasks...

You'll only ever be as good as the hardest job you complete. As long as you take your time, take it slow and follow the instructions in the Haynes manual you'll be fine. Don't let these things intimidate you, something I always tell myself is "I'm not the guy who has to design it, someone did the hard job, I just have to follow their instructions".
Gives me a bit of confidence to tackle the larger more challenging jobs.

Can you do cambelts on these the cheat way I ahve seen on the skid factory? Loosen the tensioner, slice half the belt out - slide new one half on, remove rest of old belt, push new one fully on and retension?

Possibly, but they are one of the most simple cam belt changes anyway. So not really a lot to be gained chopping the old one down the middle

As long as you take your time, take it slow and follow the instructions in the Haynes manual you'll be fine. Exactly this. The first time I took the engine out of a classic Mini it took me the best part of two days. After I'd done it a few times I got it down to under an hour drive in drive out.

That was suggested to me when I did my TT cam belt for the first time. The problem on the TT is that you really need to also swap the water pump and belt tensioner at the same time, as it seems more likely that the tensioner will seize and take the belt out than the belt fail on its own. I don't know Peugeot engines so I don't know if that's the case there too. I've had the car 17 years, and despite being fairly mechanical it's the first time I have done the cam belt, I've always paid someone else to do it. But with some decent weather and something else to use for a few days (and nowhere to go anyway) I had a crack at it, and I wouldn't worry about it next time. It's fiddly, but that's just because of where everything is. But it's only undoing and doing up some bolts, and as above, someone (lots of people) have already figured out the easiest way and stuck it on the internet to refer to. I have that concern with belts for my old Vauxhalls, because they're not always easy to get I tend to buy them and keep them on the shelf ready for if I need them, but it does concern me that maybe my shelf stock is getting on a bit. At least they're not an interference engine, though, so if one snaps it's inconvenient rather than expensive.

To conclude this thread! Cosmetically okay but a little tatty in places, seems to run well, and most importantly can see no rust to speak off other than a tiny spot on the hatch.

First thing on the agenda...work out why the sunroof won't open. And the radio turns on but can't get it to go to a radio station.

Aha the sunroof does open! It is a vacuum system and will only open with the engine on.

Common mod back in the day (but probably very hard to find now) was a clio mk1/2 rear wiper arm

I've ordered a bunch of parts, remarkable how cheap they are!
Cam belt, aux belt, 5l oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, water pump, front discs and pads...just over 100 quid.

The Clio rear wiper arm is a softer more curved one which is very easy on the eye I had one on the back of mine I also took the plastic boot panel off
