It's been a good while since posting anything about the truck as life has just got in the way over the last couple of years to do much to it. The good news is that I still love the bleedin thing and hope, once again, to get it back on the road this year.
It's a funny thing but not being around a circle of car mates and the fact that SW Scotland doesn't really do regular "pub type" meets has meant that the enthusiasm to crack on hasn't really been there.
A few jobs are being done however,  in between the rain! One of them is the decision to remove the old lpg system which worked, but in need of replacement tanks(yes 2) as they are badly rusted. With lpg getting a pain to find in most area's due to many forecourts removing the kit, I may as well just run on petrol not doing many miles per year.
Brake components have been replaced where needed and a new set of shocks have been fitted last year although it ain't been road tested yet!
So, lots of waffle but limited work done but I WILL get there

The suns been out which does wonders for moi. Over the last number of months, I have been faffing around trying to find a solution to get the aftermarket headers from leaking where they bolt to the heads. In short, you couldn't get a socket even close to the bolts due to bad design so torqueing them down was a fat failure. It was suggested to try some custom 8mm bolts but even they (£52 quid later) did not give me the clearance. I then tried to see if I could grind a bit of material off but that ended up with a big hole.




So after much annoyance, 2 new factory style cast manifolds arrived yesterday which were today fitted with little bother and with all the extra working space, I decided to do an oil change, replace the plugs and fit a new knock sensor. One tip to share is even with factory bolts, check to see if your socket can actually fit over the bolts as one or two were too close to the manifold casting and could have done with a bit of extra machining.
Not much to see but proof that something was really done








Now I must have been hiding for years not to see these Fram oil filters before as this one had a rubber coating on the end enabling one to actually hand tighten it properly which I thought was pretty cool.





Loads more to do including some engine bay painting but that will have to wait in line for more important stuff!

Well the last few days has been a proper mix of tasks and tbh, I sometimes wonder why I do this for a hobby  The tranny I bought last November has rust coming out faster than the Rona in Wohan which winds me up as obviously the p/o did a quick mask up and moved it onto a plonker like me. It's a tranny I hear you say but one thing I hate is rust having lived at the coast most of my life.
Anyhoo, the uber reliable XC70 decided to throw a wobbly and now needs a rear caliper. I can't grumble too much with this car as it's a pleasure to drive despite getting on (2006).
Managed a good time with the chevy having got rid of those lpg tanks to a local chap. Have you ever tried to dispose of these legitimately? Quite a challenge so I was happy to have moved them! Got new front brake lines made & fitted and once that was done, the replacement flexi pipes arrived from the states which were duly fitted.
Last job was to remove the exhaust system as the new downpipes from the manifold should arrive tomorrow so looking forward to ticking that job off.

All in all, some progress made despite photo proof.

One thing I will mention is the Yanks universally seem to despise those FRAM filters for being poor quality. Just thought I’d mention it.

Apparently the quality hugely differs between manufacturers between ‘here’ and ‘there’ it seems, where they have quality issues with Fram and will often lean towards NAPA and WIX whereas I’ve had WIX fuel filters here that prevent the car starting so there’s obviously a discrepancy. I’ve not had personal of the filters being bad but I’ve seen enough to make me stick to cross referencing anything to a readily available filter here. The online MANN filter cross referencing catalog is a godsend.

Just noticed something. Why the extra little red dot reflectors on the back?

At a guess, since MoT bod who missed the really very sizeable reflectors that go up the inside edge of the light units...!
