Wiki says they both are Mk1.
The ebay one is a facelift MK1, the one eternaloptimist posted is a pre facelift.

Wiki says they both are Mk1. The ebay one is a facelift MK1, the one eternaloptimist posted is a pre facelift. There is a lot of disagrement over the mk's on a Carlton and no clear facts from vauxhall on what is the real answer. Being stated on Wiki doesn't prove its fact. The links at the bottom are to 'Vauxpedianet' which is made by huge fans of vauxhall with access to a lot of internal information from the brand over the years and they list mk1 mk2 mk3. It doesn't help that the 'mk' was never mentioned by vauxhall in their advertising or internal releases (which are in the links bellow) they called them the New Carlton at each launch. Otherwise they referred to them as the 78 carlton, 83carlton and 87carlton.
As far as i'm concerned it went mk1 mk2 mk3 the mk1 facelift is the mk2. Wiki having it different is not a huge shock as a lot of people do believe there were just the 2 versions and a facelift. But if wiki is correct and there never was mk3 how come googling mk3 carlton gets you so many hits?
Anyway for more information and history than you could ever want about the design and development have a look at:

I don't profess to be an expert by any stretch, and I know wiki is an unreliable source. To me, the difference between the ebay link and the one pictured is just a bonnet, grill and headlights. Rest looks the same to me. Therefore in my mind, it's a facelift. I don't see much similarity between those listed and the later models, therefore I'd consider that a Mk. There is a lot of confusion in the car world, stuff like hatchbacks claiming to be a coupe when they're not. Ultimately, if it's not a Lotus Carlton, or a GSi3000 24v I don't care
