www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-MK1-LIMITED-EDITION-/324374538107Does anyone know anything about these? Is there any parts compatibility with the original Golfs, full or otherwise? Thinking this could be a nice daily, retro looks outside, comfy-ish interior and hopefully it can be lowered with aftermarket stuff?

As said in the ad, these are South African made and known as Citi Golf. Most suspension parts are mk1/mk2 golf, engines are as used in polo 6n, dashboard looks to be lifted from mk1 Skoda Fabia. Should be plenty of parts from the vag parts bin that works with these.

don't know loads about them, but it's called a Citi Golf in SA
I would want to make sure it's been undersealed/rust protected as I cant see that they would have done much in the way of protection from the factory.
Always found them interesting as they look to have a Fabia dash, cant remember if the front end is slightly different as they seem to have a mk2 nose.

The link is broken.
I'm assuming it was a Citi Golf. Funny old things, they sold the Mk1 in SA until 2010 as the public were initially unwilling to fork out the extra for the new Golf MK2 and it became a bit of a Mini-esque cult thing. Later ones lost the Mk1 feel, as the interiors gained a Skoda Fabia dash etc. They even made a 120bhp R-Line model.

Thinking this could be a nice daily, retro looks outside, comfy-ish interior and hopefully it can be lowered with aftermarket stuff? Its called the Citi Golf in South Africa. They are basically a 1970's mk1 in layout and basic suspension, face lifted of course and a more modern interior (skoda fabia?) I'm pretty sure the engine will be a 1.6 sohc lump very similar to what was fitted to the late 90's early 00's Golf mk4, Beetle, Bora and octavia etc. If its multi point injection it'll have about 100hp (almost mk1 gti performance), about 80hp if its on single point. Loads of parts mechanical parts are shared with European models and the great thing about VW's is that part number are stamped on virtually every part making sourcing odd ball stuff easier. Should be easy to lower etc. Model specific Interior and exterior trim parts will be tricky to source in the UK although UK dealers can also access the part catalogue for the Citi Golf (or at least we could 4 years ago when I worked for VW) and order if required (may take a while to arrive!). I looked into importing one a few years ago and think they'd be a pretty cool car.

Certainly looks an interesting way to get a modern retro, just check the rust protection, I'm old enough to remember the first mk1 golfs, they excelled at many things, unfortunately corrosion was also one of them!

Good grief doesn't anyone read posts before they reply! I'm sure I posted #2 in this thread saying south African Citi golf with Fabia dashboard and every post there after saying it's called a Citi golf in SA and think it has a Fabia dash lol.
Right, as said engines will be found in polo 6n and golfs with mpi. Suspension/drivetrain. This will differ slightly from original 70's mk1 as stated in this thread. I have a 1990 mk1 cabriolet, and these use a bit of hybrid between mk1 and mk2, mainly being hubs and driveshafts are 100mm instead of 90mm. Bodywork. This differs from original mk1, where the leading edge of the front wings are raked at more of an angle given them a profile that look more like a mk2 golf. This makes a different front grille necessary. Front door glass is one piece, doing away with the quarter light. Door mirrors are moved to bottom corner of side windows, instead of mounted on the door where the quarter light bar is. Rear window is different from a standard mk1, being not as flat and incorporating the rear wiper. Bodyshell has a hockey stick shape pressing on the c pillars which the original mk1 didn't have.

I used to own a more basic 1.3 citi golf when I lived in SA for a few years, it was a fun car and as said, lots of parts around. This one looks a pretty smart one to me. There were various run-out models towards the end of production, "Velociti" being the most common high-end model to see out there. If you want to research values etc South African gumtree is a good starting point: www.gumtree.co.za/s-cars-bakkies/volkswagen~citi/v1c9077a2mamop1

Just to add, Mavis Bacon is not a real person! (not sure how relevant that is!?) wait, what?! I know, who knew? Being honest, I had to Google Mavis after your post, I hadn't heard of her before. It was a useful Google, though. As I now have a new nickname for the speed-typing lady at work! Every day is a school day...

Fair enough, phone didn't show times of posts, just seems the amount of times I read posts with info already given sometimes people don't bother reading threads.
