Brought a cheap "invertor" arc welder from Ebay, need to make a frame for something. Works great, but the cheap auto dim helmet's not so good!
It dims fast enough, but by too much, can't actually see what I'm welding! Fiddling with the knobs doesn't do much, so do the expensive helmets work better?
Or do I go back to old school style helmet?
Thanks

Definately worth it, i have a basic one from machine mart that works well and was not very expensive.

You will get what you're prepared to pay for. Recently up dated mine to an ESAB Savage for about £80, so not that dear, but a remarkable improvement over my previous £30 Chinese helmet.

I use a Esab Warrior Tech which I think was about £80. It's been great and everyone who has used it has remarked how good it is and wants to use it again. I later found out from a friend who works in the Vauxhall factory that they use them as well.

its not the helemt, i know this sounds stupid but you probably don't have enough light there. Try pointing a torch at what you are welding.

Agreed you probably have too much light behind you as well.
As above, try a 300w halogen or decent LED lamp lighting the area and I bet you'll be amazed at the difference

I know this sounds obvious but have you removed the clear film off the lense inside the helmet? I thought mine was rubbish and it didn’t look like there was a film on it, but closer inspection showed there was. Thick, I know.

All good suggestions, I'll tackle them this weekend, before thinking about spending some money and yes, I've probably left the plastic film on it too!

I was surprised how good the £25 ones from ALDI were. Better than the significantly more expensive (but elderly) Sealey one I had. However, I recently treated myself to £160 quids worth of Lincoln-Electric and it’s a revelation. Huge viewing area and significantly less colour tint too. A lot of money, granted, but a very well made and finished bit of kit.

A lot of money, granted, but a very well made and finished bit of kit. For years I have cheap 'auto' helmets and reasonably expensive welders. Recently at work I was chatting with the welder and commented on his welding helmet, he said have a look through it and I was amazed at the clarity. Next day I ordered Lincoln large screen and like Glen I found it a revelation. I can see what I am welding and the large screen is fantastic. I also discovered that I could buy lenses that clip into the helmet so I don't have to wear my + 1.5 glasses, I alos bought a +2 just in case. Adrian

My brother bought a YesWelder helmet (aliexpress), which is really nice for the price. Big true color screen. Cant comment on reliability, but I really liked the visibility.
