It was very handy having the strip before the barrier, 50 yards up the barrier splits fir a bridge column, I climbed out the window and went in there.

I once had to change a puncture on my Sprint Shuttle trailer on the inner hard shoulder of an urban dual carriageway. It was an offside wheel and at no time did I encroach on the inner lane while changing the wheel but I was just inches away at best. I have all the kit, warning triangle, flashing beacon and cones in case of just an eventuality. It was rush hour and none of the f3ckers slowed down one iota. I still have the sweats about it.

Yeah glad you’re ok Breaking down on the motorway is a nightmare, and what really got me was how loud it is once you’re out of your insulated tin box! Caused a travel report myself a few years ago, ok not the M6, but loosing all the gears in a tanker on the A149 on the Norfolk coast road Was there for several hours too😳

Not nice, glad you’re ok, that’s a very nasty place to have to stop.
I changed a wheel on the M40 one morning. Off side wheel, had my Hi Viz on, I’m sure some lorry drivers actually drove closer to the hard shoulder than move away, I was in my caddy van too. The wind of an artic passing you at 56 mph is pretty impressive!

Being stood on the offside between my car and articulated lorries barreling past at full chat in the rain was certainly interesting. This is about 25 years ago and I was young at the time, so thought nothing of it. Certainly not somewhere I'd like to be now, especially with the increased levels of traffic and stunningly ignorant standards of driving evident on todays roads. Trucks in particular are something I keep a close eye on, you never know if the driver might be checking his Spotify.

Ouch. Not good.
A friend and I were running in his freshly rebuilt engine, in a BRIGHT PINK VW van, when the engine siezed. The van was partially blocking lane 1 as there wasn't anywhere to go to the left of it.
We ran back and put his warning triangle on the hard shoulder 100m behind the van, before calling for a tow home.
Within 10 minutes, a car had not only run over the warning triangle, but come within a second or two of hitting the BRIGHT PINK van partly blocking lane 1 when they noticed its existence...
That occasion more than any other highlighted how many people don't look ahead when driving...

Looks like a fun start to the day Wayne.
I changed an offside flat on the M62 just before the M60 once. 5pm on a Friday, absolutely horrible.

I used to cover part of the M6, M65 and M55 as a recovery driver, any offside wheel work required and I loaded the vehicle and went somewhere safe to repair? I now occasionally drive 7 1/2t fat vans for a mate, I give anyone on the hard shoulder a wide berth, if I can not I let them know I’m coming with a quick horn blow, usually get a wave of thanks.

Years ago a mate worked for a recovery agent One of his co-workers was working on the os of a vehicle on the hard shoulder, he was hit by a truck, picked up and carried a fair way down the motorway before sliding off into the road He broke a lot of bones all down his left side, and was in a coma for a while When he did come round as was told what had happened, he went into shock so badly they had to put him under again He did recover eventually Hd was one of the lucky ones 🙁

And motorways without hard shoulders are safe REALLY? 😳 Yep. I'm a roading engineer's draughtsman. Some of the 'safety' stuff we are being required to do now is, in my opinion, more dangerous than doing nothing. Once upon a time our motorways had wide shoulders and it was possible to pull off to the side in an emergency situation. Now we have guardrail on the side and nowhere to go.

We know the problem now. That’s not good..... It could be worse, they usually break a few rockers and don’t damage the valves.
