No, not an icecream van thread(sorry) but mk1 son has just been telling me how he was stopped outside a local hardware store this afternoon by a gentleman who was most keen on buying the number plate from his early 60’s landy I have had , and still get fairly regular attempts from people who want my six wheel rrc, and the last time i got a bit annoyed with a bloke who wanted my mk3 escort cabrio, who wouldn’t take ‘No!’ As an answer So, have you ever sold your transportation in the street, or parts thereof? I'm not talking about the ‘seen it sitting on the drive and door knocked ‘ sales, but the ‘and now i have to walk home’ jobs! Anyone??

My dad was a devil for leaving notes on cars that took his fancy, remember him leaving a note on a Sierra in Llandudno in around 1997, a year later we went down to pick it up. I've had a note left on my astra, never responded because I'm not selling and I think the guy thought it was a real one The one the note bought, after hed stuck a 2.0 in and Rostyles

The first show I went to after I finnished my blue clubman estate was at the Hop Farm in Kent. I hadnt been parked up for long when a Japanese man offered me a very tidy sum for it. Id only just finnished it so my answer was always going to be no, but he upped the offer, which left my mate nodding like a loon, I still turned it down. As clean and fresh as the car was, I knew id never get that sort of money offered for it again.

I had a note left on a Mk2 Golf 16v with a telephone number on it about 20 years ago and had someone ask a family member if my E46 325 Sport was for sale, the day after I bought it.

Used to get noes put through the door every few months for a 2006 astra estate we had sat on the drive, and people knocking on the door.
They changed their minds when I told them it had 197k miles on it and a snapped cambelt!
It went to one in the end, who is taking out the dead 1.9 cdti engine and installing a 1.6 petrol to take it banger racing!

Swapped my Mk1 Mexico on the petrol station forecourt for a 1970 Camaro SS in 1984. He even paid for the petrol... Does that count? P.

Someone put a note on my Samba Rallye while I was on work years ago. Turned out the daughter of a well known Samba rally man from the Isle of Mull was also a consultant with Mitsubishi works team (based in Cirencester) and saw the car and stuck a note on it.
It's currently still in Mull but sat on a farm somewhere with a stoved in front. So at least it got used.

After i left home, I considerately left my 1600E on my parents large drive as free storage My dad lasted a year before telling me ‘ will you move that bl@@dy car, I'm getting three people a week trying to buy it!’ And when I bought my first Range Rover, a ‘76 two door, within a week id had to take it to lochaline on the west coast of Scotland to collect a dive boat( long story) and the landlord pf the pub we stayed in tried to buy it! ‘Errr, no, I've brought it up here to do a job, and the people whose boat it is are going to bea bit more than hacked off with me if i tell then i cant recover their boat because ive sold the tow vehicle i was employed to use!’

I was returning from a friend's party in Portsmouth in a 1961 Morris Minor Traveller which I'd bought for £1,000 locally (those were the days!), and pulled into Clackets Lane services for fuel, to get asked by some Belgian classic car buyers with a recovery truck whether I wanted to sell it.
They made me a pretty good offer (around £1,500 from memory), so I agreed, and they followed me all the way home to Canterbury where we did the deal, and there it was gone, presumably to mainland Europe somewhere...

Only time someone's offered to buy my car was when I had my FC RX-7 convertible, I was visiting Halfords for some reason and got chatting to a guy in the car park about it, he was a previous FC owner and left me his number in case I ever wanted to sell it. Was a couple of years before I actually did sell it by which time I'd lost his number

This has never happened to me, which makes me think I don't own cool enough cars haha. I have however, had someone give me the chance to buy their car whilst I was out, and I hadn't even asked. Was a honda s600 coupe, he gave me his email add and phone number for future reference if I ever change my bank balance status from dire up a scale to cloudy with a chance of rain.

A few months back a man wandered into my office to ask about my Falcon. He thought it was probably the one that he'd purchased new many owners ago. Left a name and telephone number and said if I ever wanted to sell it I should give him a call.

1992. I had a new Volvo 440. Bought a caravan and went with wife and kid to Switzerland. Normal drive time (without caravan) about 10 to 12 hours.....back then 80 was the speed limit. Took me 2 days to get there. I did not like the towing bit. Found a camping and ended up between all senior campers. I was only 25 or so. I did not like the senior bit. Very slow trip home. All up I was hating it. Somewhere in France (we drove back through France) I saw our reflection in a shopping window. I saw myself in a bloody Volvo with a caravan at 25.....I hated the picture. 1 more overnight was needed. We so a bunch of caravans and thought we found a small camping. They where people of a traveling kind of circus. They loved the caravan and wanted to know if I would sell it. I played it cool and asked what I paid for it. They bought it there and than. We left in the morning with an over loaded Volvo, happy and content. We sold the Volvo, bought a new tent and a 2CV6 and lived happily ever after. That "keeping up with the Jones's" never really worked for us.

I've had it happen on 3 cars oddly enough, and there's no real relation to them. First one? My Merc W124 E320 Estate A friend of mine adores W124s, and he asked me if I wanted to sell it. I was in two minds. I knew sub 30MPG everyday and going weekly up a salty M6 would deteriorate it, but I loved the car! In the end we came to an agreement, and it was his: 2nd? The W108! I would get a few people asking me if I would sell it. But it eventually got sold via Car and Classic: 3rd? This will surprise a few of you! It almost did me! My daily 2.5 Turbo Mondeo! It's a rare thing with the Volvo 2.5 engine. Alot of petrol cars without a 'performance' moniker on them are at this age. After all, petrol cars were seen as the Anti-Christ at this point with Diesel looking like the way forward. With the country also going into recession, 'large' engined petrol cars were never going to be good sellers! The irony is that it's not example from emissions charges whereas its diesel brethren aren't, since it's a Euro 4 petrol!! It's funny how life works eh? As a result, I had a friend who wanted it. After all, it's a nice drive, with a decent spec and emissions compliant. I however didn't, as I may have needed a car for the same reason if Coventry's emissions zone came in; thankfully it didn't. I thought that would be that. I however would be pretty wrong! A friend of mine has a few Yank tanks and a daily car, and he wanted something very practical with him being a musician and home audio dealer, but something in his mind which was fun. That to him meant swift enough, good chassis and a manual gearbox, all under £4k. The latter for him was non-negotiable, so it's fair to say that his choices were limited. He had Fords before and he always wanted a Mondeo 2.5T, but he wanted one with certain options including: -Estate -Titanium Sports seats in Alcantara -Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) -Converse multi-function dash You can guess what options mine has. Yup, I can say that adaptive cruise control does come in handy, especially on the M6. It's interesting having that option on a manual car (2.5Ts only came as manuals) but I guess it takes some of the stress out of driving while keeping you on your toes . Despite my car having then 183,000 miles he asked me what my price would be. I told him I didn't want to sell. He then went in with: "Chas, come on, everything has a price surely?" "Nah, this is not for sale ; it does what I need it to and more, especially for what it owes me" "Come on then, hit me with a price" "£2.5k" "Come on Chas, you need to be reasonable. How about £1.5k?" "Try to find another car with my spec and condition for that money. Yes it's high mileage, but I know the car and what's been done. I will also have to find another car which can do what this can in the same condition and that will still take more than my asking price. I really don't want to sell it". He did eventually find a car with 50k less on the clock than mine, but without the adaptive Cruise and with it needing a cambelt. I think his example now owes him £3.5k as he seperately bought the ACC gubbins ; it was a £1k option back in the day, hence the scarcity of it in alot of MkIV Mondeos. A BMW friend drove my car with an S54 engined E36 Coupe, and he was saying he could fully understand why I don't want rid. Will it stay with me for as long as it can keep going? We shall see. It's odd, as this car has been mine for almost 2 years, and it's been in the family where I maintained it for a further 3 years. No, I paid alot less than £2.5k for this, which is why I plan to run it for as long as I can. It's fair to say I do enjoy cheap motoring, albeit without the car being a complete nail.

Not a car but a motorcycle
When I was a teenager I bought my first Moped (Puch Grand Prix) as a box of parts (well two tea chests actually) and built it up before my 16th Birthday - of course it only had to last me a year before I could graduate to a bigger bike at 17 and as I'd enjoyed building the Puch I looked about for another project and ended up with a BSA Bantam - this also came in tea chests however it quickly became obvious that it was more than one bike......... I think two reg plates was a bit of a clue
Anyway I built it and on my 17th Birthday had it on the road and flogged the Puch to a mate
I think it put me off British bikes as it was a troublesome POS I spent more time fixing it than riding it and it was starting to annoy me fix one thing - something else went wrong
I rode it to the BMF show the following year and parked it up in a big field
When the show finished I walked back to my bike and found a Old Bloke (OB) camped out beside it
OB "this is my bike" - I was thinking curse word was it stolen and am I about to lose it
BC "No it's my bike"
OB "yes I realise that but it was my first bike when I worked for the post office I recognised the number plate as soon as I saw it - if you ever want to sell it please give me first refusal"
BC "well I'm looking at a Honda 250 next week but it's a bit too much money for me right now but maybe in a couple of months I'll have saved a bit more"
OB "How much is the Honda"
BC "£300 but I only have £200 saved right now"
OB "I'll give you £300 for the Bantam £100 now this very min - now you can afford it - rest on collection"
This was a bonkers offer it was worth £150 tops - so we exchanged details, I rode home on it went and looked at the Honda the next day and paid for it
OB collected the Bantam the next weekend

For a short period years ago, I worked in a caravan showroom in Knutsford.
So I'm sitting there with a brew (it was a slow day) and a large Merc limo pulled up outside. A guy gets out of the back and wanders in.
"Whose is that Triumph 2000 Estate out front?"
"Mine," I piped up.
"I'll give you XXX for it now," he said pulling a roll of notes from his pocket, "It's near finishing time, you can follow me home."
"Erm, how do I get home afterwards?"
"Don't worry, we'll get you there."
So I followed him, turning down a huge drive and pulled up outside a massive garage full of Ferraris, several being worked on by mechanics. Turned out he wanted a parts collection vehicle, always liked the 2000 and mine was mint, so that was that.
This sunny evening, I pulled up outside my local in said large limo, the chauffeur hopped out and opened the door, saluted and disappeared. There were a few dropped jaws.
The following day, reality returned as I drove to work in a completely knackered Austin 1100 we'd bought for the ex to learn to drive in (she failed) and had been sat three months untouched.
Nobody dropped in to buy that.
As a finisher, the next day I was telling the tale to a pal who was in Cheshire Police Traffic.
"Oh aye, he's a legit arms dealer, got a full sized shooting range under the house."
Glad I didn't turn him down!
