Evening All. Currently toying with my 1964 Austin A40, as standard comes with a 1098 A series with a 4 speed gearbox. My question is this, being a RWD car what 1275 A series engines would I be able to fit to it as I’m sure a FWD Mini/Metro engine the blocks would be different. Any help appreciated. 👍🏻

Marina or Midget A series, or meastro, ital, montego A+.

MG Midget is easiest, either the '10CC' 1098cc (which have larger 2" crank bearings, a bigger valve 12G295 cylinder head and give around 55bhp) or the 65-70bhp 1275cc (I have the latter fitted in place of the original 1098cc in a 1970 Morris Minor Traveller). Be aware though, that Midgets use a diaghragm clutch, which is heavier to operate than original 1098cc clutches, so you'll either need to modify the mechanical linkage or convert to hydraulic actuation if you intend to use it a lot in heavy traffic. Other than that, they are a straightforward enough swap, though you may also need to change the thermostat housing as they come in a variety of angles from the radiator top hose. Even a Marina/Ital engine requires quite a few modifications (backplate, flywheel, etc.) to make it all fit to the existing gearbox. As for FWD A-series from Minis, Metros, Allegros, etc., an awful lot of conversion work needs to be done, though some folk have gone down this route. Alternatively, you could upgrade your existing 1098cc to give a bit more poke: www.calverst.com/technical-info/engine-1098-initial-tuning-potential/russellengineering.com.au/project-small-bore-engine-pt-1/

Any particular reason not to use the Marina/Ital gearbox too? It would seem to make some sense to do so.

not sure about the A40 but on the minor the starter motor part of the marina clutch housing wants to occupy the same place as the chassis leg.

Hi all. Only reason was because it is an A Series in it already and would of been almost a straight swap. If I can’t find an engine. Will go down the Xflow route.

I've got a Marina 1275 in my minor. Used the original 1098 gearbox/flywheel and clutch. Needs a bit of modification to fit but pretty simple stuff.

If you end up breaking the halfshafts, I have a spare Austin A40 pair available, if required, which came as a job lot of assorted mostly Minor parts...

Others are using suzuki engines and gearboxes to replace the A series which look a interesting swap. Length is very tight on a minor but doesn't seem to be a problem on the midget no idea where the A40 falls though if a X flow fits I don't think it will be a problem. There are also loads of parts and info out there to fit Ford Zetec or Zetec SE in a rwd car, again they are a similar size to the X flow.

I don't know if it's still a thing but someone figured out that the BMW K series motorcycle engine head could be adapted to fit on an A series block. Not recommending or warning against, just pointing it out. Some info on this thread www.mmoc.org.uk/Messageboard/viewtopic.php?t=23068I don't know if BMW K engines heads are 10 a penny or unobtanium but it's an intersting option as is supercharging the A series
