A wet one up at the Stage yesterday with 4 cars. Only managed a few images of the two Mk2 Escorts. The green car is Vauxhall XE powered i think they said around 240bhp. The Red car is full Group 4 spec with Honda S2000 power around 300bhp. The red car was built for a friend of the current owner who sadly passed away from cancer quite recently. They did a rally in his honour and then purchased back from his wife as a keep sake in his memory.
Ex Works Duval 2003 Ford Focus WRC Driver – Hugh Hunter Supported by – P&R Benn
After issues in testing earlier this year Hugh Hunter returned to Bont Rally stage to shakedown is 03 WRC Focus. The car was first seen in BP livery in 2003 driven by Francois Duval where it achieved a 4th overall in Catalunya, It then ran in Sanremo where it finished 5th, followed by Rallye Deutschland with a 7th.
The car then spent much of its time in Belgium until 2015, then ended up rallying with Hugh from 2019. In 40 event starts the car has seen 121 stage wins. Despite its age these early 00’s WRC cars are still competitive. As far as we are aware 20 of these cars were built and at least one has been destroyed.
These era of cars had some fantastic tech onboard and the teams were still finding innovative ways of going faster. The 2003 car initially had a 45litre titanium surge tank hidden behind the rear bumper to store excess air in the system which could then be re-used on part throttle to increase performance by around 5%, sadly this interesting breakthrough was soon outlawed.
Today the car is supported and maintained by P&R Benn and sits in a lovely blue and white RSH Tarmac / Lewis & Hunter Contracting Livery, last competing in 2019 at the Jim Clark where it managed a 4th overall.
