So I'm lucky enough to have a garage but haven't been able to really use it for a couple of years because of a rotted roof and leaks making it the worst place to work, and then impossible when the water got to the electrics. We're in the midst of having the whole roof done so am now thinking about redoing the electrics. Water ingress has torched the old wiring so I'm looking to redo the whole lot - but given the old lights were fluorescent tubes—and frankly terrible (buzzing, flickering, weak - all that jazz) — I'm thinking about LEDs with decent amounts of white lumens and whether there's an economic option in that direction. It's a big space - (12ft x maybe 20 ft?) - I've seen pictures of people putting lights at waist height as well as from above which seems interesting. given it can feel really dark even with the lights on but only from above. Really just seeing if anyone's done LED recently and if they have any recommends on good brands / economic ways of doing it. One day my Foz will have some lows - I just need to be able to see what I'm doing! Penance for this question? Some pics of my Foz before the roof got bad. And the old one before we sold it. "YOu're oNly mEaNt To BlOw ThE BliMmiN DoOrS oFf! New old door. Wrong Silver Paint Code. Hanging out with a Disco (Similar energy) Yes. Some drunk wandering home did that when they found a tin of spilt paint in the road. Luckily it was emulsion. Ooh Yakima Roof Spoiler..! Christmas Forestry, and reason for new door. A deer headbutted the door. It didn't end well for either. Hanging out with it's redneck NA cousin. The old one doesn't know its fate.

Dan I’ve looked into these before but couldn’t work out how they can be connected up to power, and the took station person that answers the questions didn’t know either. Do they wire directly to a switched 240v supply or do you need a separate transformer pack etc?

Few ceiling mounted and can also wall mount them.

I am contemplating them to maximize the height in a relatively low garage. and if so, how did you mount them?

The panels are really made to fit into suspended grid ceilings. We fit a lot of them in offices to replace old fluorescent fittings. You can buy a surface mounting kit for them. I’ll be plasterboarding my garage ceiling and installing a good few of these. They’re cut into the ceiling so will help you keep the height. www.ledkia.com/uk/buy-basic-ultraslim-led-downlights/518-round-48w-ultraslim-led-panel.htmlThese are also around 4000 lumen output similar to the 600x600 panels. Also make sure you get the colour temperature right when you’re ordering. In a garage setting you really want around 4000k IMO. 6500K starts to look almost blue. 4000k will give you a nice white light.

I'm in the process of fitting new lighting to my garage and whilst initially the square panel lights seemed a good idea, when you add in the cost of a mounting kit, or the effort of making something to hold them they don't seem so great anymore. The batten lights like jimi points to above are much easier to fit, literally seconds, and are just as low profile. Each one has it's own power circuitry but you must make sure they are fused appropriately for the flying lead they come with.

Thanks all this is helpful. While they are designed for suspended ceilings, is there any reason I couldn't flush mount say with s brackets? Or do the wires come out the back and need some space?

If your fittings are OK just fit LED tubes. Just done this myself. Got the tubes from TLC Direct. 2 minute job to change tube and starter. If you have electronic ballast (no starter) you need to modify the wiring. Money well spent, no noise, instant light and brighter.

Mine are mounted directly on the ceiling with some uPVC j-trim ( coz I had some laying around 😬) it just slides in. The wires do come out of the back but only by a few mm. They also have a separate transformer ( led driver) that you have to fit somewhere.( I cut a hole in the plasterboard and put it inside the ceiling. Really pleased with the lighting now😁

thanks! I appreciate it - I may have to go for standard LED fixtures then - I could cut into the ceiling there is room but there is an apartment above and the space is already uninsulated so adding holes would not go over well. I had thought about bulbs but the fixtures are so old....

I got 3 x 5ft Led battens from TLC Electrical for just over £20 each and £15 for 1 x 4ft above the bench although that one needs relocating as I put a shelf beneath it! Paint the walls white too to reflect the light. I love the space and it encourages you to work as it’s not all gloomy in there. Stick on Planet Rock and I can be there for 6-8 hours no problem. Size is 6.8m x 3.25m by the way. www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/KBBAT5.html

I was thinking of panelling in the whole ceiling of my spray booth in white ploycarb and stringing a load of led tape up above it between the joists. Why have light fittings when you can have the entire ceiling as a light.. lol

Best welding light I have ever used. Was toying with the idea of placing one in the floor with a metal grate on top for protection. They all come with a transformer which I think is 12v and don't require earth. I apologise for the "pro led panel holder deluxe".
