It’s actually an edwards box and pan, but the terms end up being fairly interchangeable within the trade. I thought it was a box and pan folder , never heard the two terms used differently in 26 years in the fabbing game . I hear it all the time. Tbh 9 times out of 10 people mean a box and pan, most people have never seen a used a true brake.

So it’s now out of the way-ish on the concrete with the other heavy stuff. Another job jobbed. Nice to see that my old Midas trolley is still being put to good use - and it has still got the orange paint on it!! That trolley is a tough old thing. Becuase its so bl00dy heavy it usually only comes out when everything else has been broken/otherwise discounted! The ramp on it must be around a ton and it doesn’t even break a sweat at that.

This one I might have been putting off a bit. Mostly cos it weighs 1.5 tons and lifting it high enough to go onto the truck bed was quite an issue. As you can see, I got around this in a safe and sensible manner 🤣 No one died though, and quite a while later it was all loaded up, along with the gantry crane and accompanying cabinet. And some more driving and it’s now at this end.

So once the massive heavy chunk of greenness was dragged up country, I did a couple of van runs of smaller stuff. When I got two vans full of stuff up there I realised i has pretty much nowhere dry or secure left to put it, so I bought a metal shed off marketplace. It’s actually a pretty nice one, suspended ply floor, and the guy I got it off has fitted a fusebox, strip light and sockets in it. Not that I’ll use them as it’s 10ft away from the garage, but it adds value when I sell it on. I was about 20 miles away and I couldn’t be arsed with the hassle of dismantling and reassembly, but I had a plan for that. It worked well to say I couldn’t do the straps too tight without damaging the roof, but I did bottle going on the A1 on the way back and took the back roads so I could stay below 50 😂 It holds more or less two Peugeot expert loads of cr4p, so it’s pretty much perfect. But to pick it up I had to upload the big green thing, which I had been putting off, mostly cos it was no less sketchy than getting it on! Lots more wheels stacked up and sleepers cut down into blocks (hence chainsaw) and I could carefully edge the truck out from under it. After a lot more sweating and swearing (I did it on Monday, the second hottest day of the year) It’s on the floor. It’s bloody heavy though. How heavy? This heavy- So now I’ve got a pallet truck to fix, and I need to make a more robust dolly or something to move the machine on.

Really enjoying this thread Dez, for me it's relatable (work/life balance type stuff) and inspirational because I'd like to follow a similar path. Keep the updates coming, it's the first thread I look for updates on.

Tbh it what I needed to hear right now, as after handing back my old workshop at the weekend I was in a ‘WTAF have I done’ phase after going from 2500squ. Ft. To a double garage and a lot of temporary solutions 😂 I know long term it’s the right thing, just right now it does feel like a self inflicted setback.

Mate, it was always going to be a tough transition. Your workshop was a great setup that you'd put a lot of effort into before and after the fire... You're going to end up with a better solution for you personally and professionally, but there's still a lot to do. I do enjoy reading the updates though

I was wondering why You haven't waited with that impressively huuuuge logistic job (actually far too much to imagine a one man job) till You at least have raised a roof over all that equipment, but I didn't want to comment that so far.
A garage move with so many ongoing projects? I would have wetted my pants already. But a move to some kind of big garden with only a double garage in it so far? No way for me, I wouldn't even have considered this.
So: BIG RESPECT!

honestly mate what your doing here is possibly more inspirational than your already impressive car builds, moving to make your family life better and bringing everything with you with a can do attitude is amazing.

And remember, if you're feeling a bit lost and need a pick up, you can apparently pick up pretty much anything with a block and tackle, enough blocks of timber and a blatant disregard for safety. ETA, not really, looks perfectly structural to me! As long as the rims don't buckle..

No way for me, I wouldn't even have considered this. So: BIG RESPECT! the reason that I don’t don’t build before moving, was that it was just a stretch too far to do so. As you’ve alluded to, the logistical part of the project was a big undertaking on its own, and almost too much for one person. Apart from a bit of help off George lifting stuff I’ve done it all on my tod though. I didn’t have the time or finances to start a major construction project whilst wrapping up the workshop, selling off cars, finishing the transit, and actually moving stuff- that was after already having done the same at the house down there 6 months before. I decided to do all that and get everything I wanted to keep up here, so I didn’t have other commitments 150 miles away i would keep having to divert attention to. I’ve not quite made it there yet, there’s still some loose ends, but the fundamentals are sorted. I stupidly figured out how much it’s cost me to move everything. In fuel and maintenance costs for the vehicles in use (I.e. the running repairs) it’s been about £2.5k. 🤯 Imagine if I’d paid someone to do it! But on top of that I’ve not earned anything this year, any money coming in has just been from selling off extraneous gear/tools/etc. so it’s hit my finances pretty hard getting over that ‘hump’. Conversely, I’ve gone from needing to find about £1200 a month to keep my head above water, to about £400. No mortgage, no rent, council tax has halved, verious other bills are significantly lower up here (water is half the price for example), no fuel for commuting. I can’t really make the baseline cost of living any cheaper unless I go off grid! As others have said, long term that’s a total game changer. I’m still going uphill at the moment as I’ve got the construction/restoration to fund, but once that is done things should be pretty good, and my lifestyle totally different. The wife has also made similar significant changes, swapping a career for a part time job. But I’m sure we’re not the only ones to do such things recently. No point having nice things if you spend your entire life at work to pay the man for them.

I the spirit of sorting out the problems I already have before I create some new ones, I made up some dollys for the trumpf so it’s movable without major headaches. Now they’re just low level migraines 😂 They’re very heavy duty- i used 2 lengths of 5”x2.5” 10mm wall RHS I’d been saving for a while for this. They’re part of an old barn frame! It’s made an appearance elsewhere as part of my chassis table, and before that as the door posts on the old workshop rebuild. I used every last inch of it so it’s done well. Throw in a load of 1/4” plate cut and welded to provide some drop and keep the CoG reasonable, and a set of appropriately heavy duty wheels off a 3 ton bin (I bought 3 sets off a mate when he moved out his old workshop, there’s some on the chassis table and some on the model A body dolly) and we were good to go. The only actual purchase was a tenners worth of bolts in the frankly annoying size of m14, to bolt the castors up. I actually finished them off nicely, all rounded corners and painted up properly as I don’t want to have to revisit this as I’m going to have to with a few other jobs where I’ve built stuff and they’re functional but not ‘finished’. They widen the footprint out a lot which makes it feel a lot safer to move. Even on the pallet truck you were aware of how narrow the machine was for its immense weight, it felt like it could go over at any time. I guess that’s why there’s the big lifting eye on top. Also it raises it up 7.5” which makes the working height much more comfortable for me, being tall. Previously i really needed to sit down to work at it for any length. But yay, that’s a line drawn under that. I’ve also managed to sell a load of sh1t I didn’t need this last week, I kicked out the last of the Skoda parts as a job lot as I was bored of trying to sell them to feckless idiots, plus some more tools and cabinets (I literally have 3 of everything- unless it’s hammers, I have 300 of them 😂) so soon I might be able to think about starting to build something… I think I’ll do that on the other thread though seeing as it’s not a vehicle. Or maybe I need to start another one on the garage section.
