Be careful with the 100HP front bumper, apparently they are as rare as hens teeth now and watch for the spring cups on the rear axel as they a have a reputation for rusting through. I have a the 1.3TD and they are a hoot to drive. Front bumper was the first thing I inspected inside and out. It’s had a corner scuff repainted to a good standard but isn’t damaged at all. Underneath is very clean. Fiat finally got their rust rep sorted by this period, there’s no difference in the quality of underside finish to VW of the period.

I had a 1.2 version was great fun to drive, the challenge was keeping momentum, I'm sure a 100Hp is even more fun.

Good friend had one from newish and that was a hoot, if a bit crashy on bumpy lanes. Am I right in remembering that swapping for fiat 500 bump stops on the rear is a thing to give a bit more control ? Nice choice Fiat make fun little cars. James

I've always quite liked the 100hp, fancied one but not owned one yet. Closest I've got so far was a Yaris T Sport, similar recipe with it being circa 100bhp and lightweight, surprised me with how much fun a car with that power level can be on a decent B road

I keep looking at these and like you say for the price nothing touches them. When I was looking in summer though there were quite a few fetching quite a high price so they are definitely on the rise. Like you say way cheaper than the like of a 182 or a lupo GTi though.
Let me know when you sell the cube. I may be interested.

James They’re known for having a bit of an appetite for rear bump stops, but no one cares cos they’re like £10. I think they’re basically used as a bit of an antiroll bar/progressive spring tbh. I’ve not head about using 500 ones, i assume they’ll be shorter giving better ride but at the expense of some more body roll.

A set of cloth ones (like these) is 400ish, double that for leather. Good job I’m not really a fan of leather interiors! Even the steering wheel and airbag is best part of £200 which was a bit of a shock!

I find Toyota expensive/difficult on parts so I tend to steer clear anyway. Even though I have access to much more exotic and exciting machinery I’m a big fan of this class of small, light, sporty variants of what are otherwise generally granny-spec shopping trolleys. Lupo gti/sport, swift sport, panda 100hp, some civics, etc. Especially when they drop in value to the point where you can thrash them without worrying about parking something worth a house deposit in a ditch when hooning! The flip side is also you can have massive fun on roads that would be fairly boring in bigger, more powerful cars.

There was no reason we/she couldn’t drop 5-6k on something, but what extra are you actually getting by doing so? Personally I can’t see any more value in a Lupo gti (and I have experience of all their bad points) or a 182 whatever. I think buying this sort of car is all about bang for buck, and the fiat definitely delivers that. Cube is almost ready for sale. I’ve put two new tyres on it, new front brakes and a backbox. I need to give it a good clean and re-mot it, then it’ll be advertised.

Hi Dez..Been a follower/fan of your builds from day one...i have always wondered what would a guy like you want with a lupo which has popped up in a few pics overtime..Well now we all know..I have always messed with classic minis and have never really come across a modern car that gives the same vibe as a quick modified mini..That was until my son bought his first car which happened to be a Lupo..many thousands later it became his ultimate toy..Then a chance opportunity came up to buy a Lupo Gti..What a magic car this is exactly the same feeling a modified classic mini gives but with a few mod cons..Improved with quality coilovers this car is a gem..the road holding is unreal and makes it just perfect for an everyday quick car to put a smile on your face..Prices of these are going crazy as not many are left the modern day equivalent Mini Cooper s..look forward to seeing more updates..cheers..

I fully understand about the quick little car thing. I’ve been seriously tempted by an Up! Gti since they came out.

Hi Dez, Following on from my Dad's comment, Lupo's are awesome. I've had both the 16v 100bhp and GTI, loved both. Unfortunately the GTI's have gone to stupid prices, which is why i'm glad i managed to get mine when they were still cheap! So far (touch wood) i've not had any of the GTI gremlins, but being a 6 speed the box is a lot better than the chocolate 5 speeds. The Panda's are fantastic, just a shame they too seem to be following GTI prices now... Pic of mine for you, back when they were £1500 lol

hudson66 and lewdeak, yeah I still have a lupo (tdi sport) on the fleet and still have a thing for them. The chassis in them isn’t much cop out the box though, I’d never consider owning one without aftermarket coilovers, as they’re wet and wallowy, but you both know that already. That’s what surprises me about the Fiat, the suspension is so right from factory, I was actually shocked on the test drive. Interesting you say the 5spd is meant to be weak and the 6spd better though, I’ve always known it as the other way round. I think every gti ive known had has box issues.

The residuals are absolutely insane for such a mediocre spec. Normal ups were immediately discounted on being dangerously underpowered. I mean I know gtis have only been out for 4? Years, bit £12k for something that isn’t any faster than a 20 year old Lupo seemed nuts. The performance is so uninspiring, I do question wether it’s really worthy of the gti tag.

I didn't realise Lupo GTi's had got such a following. A rich kid at school got one for his first car, he thought it was the dogs curse word till he spent the next 12 months watching the rear lights of my Clio disappearing into the distance lol.

Since when has any VAG vehicle not had an eager gang of scenesters busily circle-jerking the values of vehicles into the stratosphere? 😬😂

Where was I? Oh yeah, fixing all the bodges on a cr4ppy old Skoda pickup. So I mounted the seats. This was simple and also complicated. I didn’t want to mod the mounts on the car, or the seats incase I change my mind on em. I used the runners that came with the seats, but they were spaced 20mm closer together than the original Skoda ones, which complicated matters. Offsetting the seats outwards so one rear bolt hole was reused made it easier. Rear mounts are just flat bar bridging the rear mount with some holes to bolt the new runners to. Front mounts had to extend forward to pick up on the originals. They’re just more flat plate bent, shaped and drilled. Notice the holes for the rails are offset. They bolt up here to the original mounting holes on the rails. They fill the original cutouts in the carpet which keeps things tidy. And offsetting them keeps this gap between seat plastics and sill trim nice and tight, which looks better than being able to see down it. This was then copied over to the other side, and everything bolted down. The Skoda seat belt stalks even bolted straight to the side of the citroen seats like they were meant to be there, which was nice. I forgot to take a pic though. So that’s one more thing off the list. 1.-dislocating front chopped springs. 2. balljoint. 3. Rear tyres shagged out. 4. wheel flat spot. 5. Rear exhaust. 6. Fan wiring/switch. 7. Front crossmember. 8. Stereo on permanently. 9. Drivers speaker grille missing. 10. seats. 11. No v5. 12. No rear springs. 13. Bit of grot on rear shock turrets. 14. Drivers window falls off the runners. 15. Gear linkage very sloppy. 16. Damaged rear brake pipe. 17. Intermittent misfire.

Interesting you say the 5spd is meant to be weak and the 6spd better though, I’ve always known it as the other way round. I think every gti ive known had has box issues. Having had a couple of Arosa/Lupo boxes apart.... it's unsurprising the GTi rips them up. They are just too weedy for the job. Even the snorting 60bhp of our 1.7SDi was enough to chew up the bearings and diff planet wheels..... That car was surprisingly fun given it's serious lack of urge - teaches the art of momentum management! Nick

I bought one as the only sub 15 year old car I've ever owned, and I found it really disappointing. The handling and performance were pretty dull and then it was just a slightly tarted up UP! and expensive for what it was. I sold it after 6 months and went back to a diesel 205 then a Smart car. Proper small, light cars like your lupo.
