That's a bloody good load! Is this part of the move? Good effort getting shot of a few, must have apace to work/walk/move now! Any progress on the transit? Yeah it’s part of moving. The timing of Getting rid of a couple has worked out well that’s for sure. Transit has progressed a lot more, I’ll update on that later.

I fixed the slam locks on the van. They’d open on the inside, but not from the outside. One door felt like it might open, the key wanted to turn a bit where it didn’t at all in the other two. I decided to investigate this further. After a lot of lube and wiggling, it popped open. Ain’t it always the way 😂 I then proceed to strip the lock down and found this- ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220306/cf05f07c39749c231c67ab674c214473.jpg) Notice that little bit in there? After a lot of messing about using all 3 hands to press back the double shielding to pop the broken bit out the slot- ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220306/18b865b09d1e04ae1740383e91f00f96.jpg) I thought the key looked a bit shorter than the pics online! I took the bits to a local locksmith and he made this from the bits. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220306/ea5202821109f1dcb90ca368b90b2c7e.jpg) And now all 3 doors work from the outside too. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220306/dd1dcbf25fe89a2117cd2296bde00bc5.jpg) So it turned out to be fairly simple, just needed a bit of thought. So now I’ve just been loading it up to the roof with stuff. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220306/541baa03d3728728e0f3be8db639e0bf.jpg) ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220306/11021168bba34241ead681f56285bc73.jpg) This van has turned out to be a proper champ tbh, the load space ain’t huge but it can carry weight. Was it it lower than that Civic with the slate in you posted once? That was funny. Hada fair bit of soil in the back of mine once and like you say it handled it so well. Not that they are fast but hey don't seem to slow down with weight. Nothing was as low as the civic when I did that 😂 I don’t think it ever really recovered, I’m pretty sure it did the rear end bushes and the exhaust broke shortly after. Good job it got weighed really!

This was the small* amount of concrete posts I picked up the other week to use as a base for a couple of greenhouses. Those posts are 5x7”, part of an old barn frame. I had to use an engine crane to get them out by myself. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220309/44a7e9eea4f9c2cf5b18d44d91a57123.jpg) According to an online concrete weight calculator, I was at around the 900kg weight limit for the van. It still had suspension and didn’t drive any worse! ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220309/c9e5693e65b26098cb71bd923f83c43a.jpg) None of the other loads I’ve had in have had it sitting as low, so I assume they were all less.

I'm surprised the load with the lathe wasn't over 900kg!

I'm surprised the load with the lathe wasn't over 900kg! That lathe isn’t actually too heavy. It’s only a south bend 9” clone (albeit an all-singing super fancy one with lots of extras). I think it weighs around 350kg all in.

I need to drag this back up from the depths to continue chronicling the transit rebuild. My various threads on here all need to converge/diverge as I’ve got so much going on, and it’s all crossing over all the time. As well as all the vehicles covered here, including those with their own threads, there’s a house renovation and a workshop renovation/build to cover as well… Where I’d left off id been working down the drivers side, and had got all the front section together. I then went to refit the door, and this is where disaster struck. I was refitting the door to give me something to work to when doing the arch, and one of the bolts snagged in the threads on the lower hinge plate and tore it out of the captive bits inside. This lead to much swearing, and then this- ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220409/4677d1823e6ae32c48c078589351d9bb.jpg) It was the only way I could access it to sort it as I’d just welded all those bits together, enclosing the ‘box’ the lower hinge is hidden in. You can see where it tore the end out of the thin tabs that keep the hinge plate captive but still allow it to adjust. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220409/33451f04665d95c3d3c10fca47d1333a.jpg) They were fixed- ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220409/1f9cce18ae1206fecafb114f23a852ed.jpg) Then the section I cut out was refitted. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220409/a919b1775ac689cca5b98edf978f4edb.jpg) And ground up. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220409/070aaaf477600fd97b1922da5a244653.jpg) I could then refit the door as I intended in the first place! ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220409/fda057687a43754346c9912847d51fd3.jpg) ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220409/d8872dbb2384b4d17cf20d842af78990.jpg) I also tapped out all the holes to make sure they were clear, but tbh I couldn’t see why it had happened on the the first place unless it was cross threaded, but it just didnt seem possible for that to have happened in the space available. Still, even though it was one step forward, two steps back, it’s all sorted and fixed now.

With that minor hiccup sorted, it was more of the same really. The job was close to a mirror image of the other side, with some detail differences. Some repairs were done to the rear cab outrigger, mostly the return lips. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220415/8504174fe65d3f83f508ebed85659a51.jpg) The new step section had minor modifications and was fitted up with the inner sill. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220415/9ab45d2c998b5c98a782ba23cbfc58b7.jpg) Which wasnt big enough to cover the grotty bits so I had to add an intermediate section. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220415/ae1cdcdee7b91da1a3a006a1e95921a0.jpg) With that all spotted in place i made up a new floor edge- ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220415/9bd3ed3288eaac7ca2d93a08537a2151.jpg) The seat box brackets had to be salvaged off the old section first though. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220415/185c652be86849e64cbf788d067e8ff4.jpg) And added before the floor goes over the top. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220415/9c066af2bf8b45446ad01d89df447b9c.jpg) ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220415/4cc7dd853018ebdd948dfade178fe75f.jpg) ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220415/71c6cd4b0837b0a2fb225df0c823388d.jpg) An extra section of not very good floor was cut out further forwards and patched in too. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220415/96c16f48c60647c6eef4cd207219c8bc.jpg) All fairly meat and potatoes, but all had to be done, and critically done in the right order. Tbh by this point I was flagging and had really lost interest in this weldathon, it was only the fact that it was stopping me getting on with other things that I need it for that kept me going. Even then I was down to 1 day a week on it and was struggling to keep motivated, I really had to force myself to get started on it some days!

Next bit was the front outrigger. I made one up from 2mm using the template from the other side, modified to suit. They’re different as this side has the Jack recess in the step so the rear upright is shorter. Here it is painted inside and ready to go on. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220416/a3ccc7c3d946bd6aba5aa1226a5115dc.jpg) And here it is fitted. These are a real make or break part for these transits are no one makes them and they tie pretty much every other panel under here together, and make the arch step actually capable of supporting weight. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220416/1e0e05f2ed9751e1f90e556ed66b4836.jpg) Next the outer skin was stuck on. This is pretty easy as it has so many references it can only really go on in one place with little adjustment. Just lots of spotwelds and a bit of dressing of the double return in the back corner as it didn’t quite line up. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220416/24e5e264a30fc3871c36ed4de0fe2c9e.jpg) ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220416/a8641954756c1af47d94db91f6498fa0.jpg) The next bit is this outer-inner arch section. This is a genuine one salvaged, so fits pretty nice. You kinda just force it into place between the A pillar flange/inner arch flange and the outer arch skin, and it sets the shape of the outer arch. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220416/cb165b9f67592f6782ac084b8708b892.jpg) ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220416/ac746d50610aa1bfc7341b51b29423db.jpg) The order I’ve put panels in may seem a little odd, but working from the inside outwards rarely gives the best results. This bit goes in now as it firms up the outer arch and gives me something to work to for making the final couple of complicated/fiddly panels.

The last two panels are the same as the other side, the inner dogleg section and the wheel tub that meets it. Both not available and both panels that test the skill of anyone attempting to make them. What I started with- ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220418/6036d0c3387b3b7cc08790674c0f6e45.jpg) Some cutting out and I’m into making up the dogleg box section. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220418/a91055c0aac7ef83b213054922200993.jpg) There’s lots of curves involved, as well as steps. The top bit has a ‘S’ to it which is gentle at one end and sharp at the other, the lower part curves to match the arch underneath. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220418/2c9ace714b15fe825b1c89ce9f08e681.jpg) These are then marked up, cut back and welded together. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220418/17287ca8efff70d0aae758e680fe39bb.jpg) ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220418/e37e417d6fdb7be9382d27108b5faf89.jpg) ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220418/4d2b0ece7f8bd7e2ce6c551ff96f7587.jpg) And then it’s welded in. The other panel also involves a lot of shrinker stretcher action- ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220418/db9926a559bde01db2cd4ed0fd6f779a.jpg) Before also being stuck in. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220418/601d5300e57b73012373e1f6278b3282.jpg) Look, no more holes! ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220418/2cccbae88c9a4b4e3926cca41cb346ea.jpg)

After a bit of tarting round grinding bits and cleaning stuff up I went in heavy with the seam sealer. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220422/8fd739b8acd89ee06de5c588dd7d9793.jpg) And then the grey primer. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220422/467835ea73d33dbcfe89eedd591a3c56.jpg) ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220422/53727243b879e873d014c78e9ddc872b.jpg) ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220422/1e8b5d8947ca6f1f03e36c282e25afa8.jpg) ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220422/cacde31a7bc933af3d0bec0062ad6df2.jpg) So that should now all be reasonably well protected. As it was all looking reeet fanceh I decided I couldn’t refit the rusty seat box so got it blasted and painted it before refitting. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220422/d31b8f7672ffa5e58bfaac9f34285783.jpg) I then refitted and tidied up all the wiring and put the battery back in. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220422/55715e9190f740b1f7a39217a656ffd7.jpg) And the floor mats were laid back down. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220422/3848674fc0ad59ff175e0dce0d68184f.jpg) I then put the seats back in after a quick Hoover (they’re still filthy mind). ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220422/7973e2e6817da78d7853e838d3b7aa08.jpg) ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220422/491d832645da7d471c21b645431d112c.jpg) So it’s starting to look pretty complete again, and rather proper for a transit!

Wow, rarely has a middle aged Tranny been lucky enough to get such a classy restoration 🙂 Nick Shame that a middle aged Tranny needs such an immense load of classy restoration! One might think that Ford should have improved their rust protection methods in umpty years, but it seems the middle aged fords still rot just like those 70s escorts. ![:|](//storage2.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/plain.png) Not only Ford of course, my favourite japanese microvans can do play that game, too. btw. I had the same thought like glenanderson one post higher, but didn't Dez mention at some point that the transit will receive a paintjob later?

My dad had a Mk 1 Transit, a 1969 H plate twin-wheel box body on a chassis cab like this one. That needed new cab steps and arches by the early 80s. Anything over ten years from a commercial is doing well, they just never seem to get the same protection that cars do these days.

Design life of most commercials is around 10 years, they are a tool to be used every day then disposed of, they are all pretty similar, look at an equivalent sprinter or LT and it will be much the same.
The newer generations come with 12 year warranty and seem to be holding up better.

Yeah in commercial terms this is old. I mean I got excited when I saw a smiley transit on the road a few weeks back, they’re that rare a sight now. Whilst mk7 a are everywhere still, even mk6 aren’t too common now.
Topcoat will come later. There’s a fair bit more to do before I get to that and I need to use it a lot before then. The primer is weatherproof and is a sort of at-a-glance match for the silver most of the rest of it is so it doesn’t look too rough.

So then this happened. Under its own power as well with only a quick battery charge. Not bad to say it’s been parked for over a year… ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220507/ea4f7938c227fcdceba0f131c70e2bcd.jpg) Once outside I arsed about testing various bits for size. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220507/39a54c6a9ee061e96a276937aa7bc9bb.jpg) ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220507/a4bd669d8a0fef384113df8fb11fad8e.jpg) ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220507/28b1b181334be1e9470a42454db70650.jpg) This pic kinda shows where I’m at finish wise at the mo. It’s not too multicoloured so it’ll do for now. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220507/60d676055dcb8117f126b024556ad00b.jpg) ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220507/2a0363e67d232b94856ede8aeeafbd09.jpg) ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220507/c7f6c324a3b776069d713dcdfe60d8f2.jpg) The bodywork is 95% complete but I’m properly burned out on it so I need to do a few other things before I finish the last bits. Starting to look fairly complete again aint it? So the next job is to take it apart again 🤣

So next job was to take the bed off so I could flip it over to finish weld everything. First I welded in the last two little legs id not yet added. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220510/9f6bee8d6af649d935f68f04c1005774.jpg) By far the easiest way to do this would have been with some extra muscle, but I was short on time and couldn’t be waiting round until there was 3 other capable bodies up the yard. So out came the gantry crane. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220510/a28ae9536b6625ff628e343738b78115.jpg) Working on your own a lot means you get used to things like this, and you make a lot of equipment to get things done! ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220510/a934749731c7e0a40bdc93762fd0ddb0.jpg) Tbh it actually made rolling it over quite easy too, as I was pivoting the weight around the centreline rather than actually having to lift it. I did some of the welding with it up on its side, then flipped it the other way and did a load more. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220510/80ce1b81677b4219ff598db7f546bc6d.jpg) I then laid it down flat to the final sides. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220510/57ea7b4cb30f3960d9cc7d186f2b4729.jpg) It was about this time some extra people turned up so it was moved inside for me to continue the weldathon the next day. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220510/6b12eccc828e255dee4948d8e5d8af8c.jpg)
