How to build a car from scratch

Progress, as you can tell from the gaps in the content, has been slow on the ol Locost recently.

In this instance below, suppliers have been taking their sweet time getting the deliveries to me, which compounded with me measuring, ordering then measuring and ordering in increments rather than buying waste has caused the progress to be snails pace.

That said, it has freed up time for me to more or less finish the tandem Impreza resto, in turn making space in the other half of the unit. It has also given me an enforced breather.

Most of you big project boys will affirm this; it can be a drain ploughing all your time into one huge project. That can suck the joy right out of it, and having found that with the wee Locost recently, it was flying in the face of the whole reason for building it.... to enjoy building it.

As such, I have reprioritised the whole youtube thing. I'm still planning on a video a week, but similar to the Impreza its not ALL going to be Locost stuff. I've got some 3rd party things brewing, and there may be some other new projects lined up from others that I'll cover.

I know I'm not going to be a youtube millionaire so its a side effect of the real reason I do all this: To enjoy doing all this.

Anyway, waffle over, here's an exhaust!

Hot off the first start victory, we have a healthy length of issues that have either been brought up as a result of said start, or just flat out ignored by me up until now.

As our next milestone to shoot for is going to be a first drive, its time to take stock and see whats needed to hit that:

Yeah, nice episode that one. Rear looks solid as now. Would a rubber washer or something on top of the metal penny washers act to stop the fibreglass cracking from movement in the future? Not a material I'm too familiar with so might not be relevant.

So with the bones of a body shell coming together, and spurned on by that victory, I decided to plump out the £100 plus on raw materials for this one single part of the car and give it a go.



The Aluminium is just the basic 1.5mm thick stuff. Sure, thinner would have been easier but I worried it would be thin to the point of rippling during use from wind and such, plus errant stones would probably dimple at that thickness.

The hammering wasn't as hard as I'd imagined, in fact it formed really bloody well.

So my next target is to get the chassis in paint, so I'll be having a good old walk around now and cross checking I haven't missed any welding!!
