Hi,
I've just bought a very nice T4 autosleeper - i was told of some problems with gearbox - i've driven it 300 miles on motorway no problem (obviously as havent been changing down!)..noticied when changing it was a bit ratchety getting it into gear and sometimes quite difficult to get into gear...however close to home where there are a lot of hills I had to change down into 3rd on s very steep hill and just couldnt get it into gear at all - eventually i did. Then stopped at a junction and couldnt get it into 1st. Shes had a new clutch fairly recently - I'm not mechanical at all tbh but want to ask for expert advice before I take her to a garage.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

can you select all gears without the engine running , if you can the fault is within the clutch, maybe pressure plate ?, if you cant select gears without the engine running then the fault is probably box related

T4's have several rubber bushes on the gear selector levers. My old high mileage T4 needed a new set and the gear selection and shift feel was massively improved once fitted. I'd suggest checking these for play.

We had quite a bit of trouble with our T4 when we bought it with not going into gear. We found under the rubber gaiter on the floor, there is a plastic square with a lip thats fastened to the floor. The lip is what a lug on the gearstick runs up against and stops you going into reverse unless you press the gearstick down. Upon pressing the gearstick down, the lug clears the lip and allows the stick to move further over to go into reverse.
We found this black plastic square need adjusting and realigning so that the movement of the gearstick matched the gates in the gearbox so all gears could be selected.

Check the gear linkage bushes on top of the gearbox first, they have a habit of disintegrating
