The windscreen is a vast improvement on the original which kind of looked like an after thought. That Lexus based drift car is awesome. It's along the lines Of Dez and his 1947 Ranger build. I love me some out of the box thinking.

I want to mount the LR frame in such a way that it can be folded down flat.

Plan currently in my head, is to use flat bar, possibly 5mm and to replicate all the existing holes for mirror nd also to create an internal mounting point for the net doors I am going to make up to mount to.

That will be “L-Bracketed and gusseted in the lower side kick panel space and bolted through the floor, either to an extended tab from the chassis, or using a sandwich to spread the load.

At the top where it comes through the dash/firewall/A-pillar corners, a slightly complex bit of engineering will ensue, resulting in a solid mounting point bilaterally for the screen to hinge from and then some form of tab onto which the screen can be secured when upright.

This is what needs to be reverse engineered from the screen in position.


So glenanderson brought over his restored Land Rover front screen frame yesterday for me to use as a lighter than glazed mock up item.

They attach with a bolt either side of the cab, and are held in place a Y-shaped plate and nut either side

He brought me a drivers side item, with wing nut for quick release, which left me needing a passenger side item.







My current plan is to create a single unit, like a Twin Lilly on a stalk to hold both the bolt and retainer plate, and then to bolt down the side, incorporating both of the door hinges and a backing plate insure the body down from the A-pillar. This should give enough strength to hold and sustain the window frame once glazed.

The plan is also to add a wedge of very high density foam under the screen, as it is done on the Land Rover to increase the slope rearward.

This will automatically lower the screen some more visually.

So this morning I posted a request for a plate to buy on various forums, as well as on my general FB home page.

Within half and hour, my buddy Ricky, who bought the Chrome Smoothies off the C10 Chevy just over 5 years ago, contacted me nd said he would investigate a lead he had.

An hour ago he messaged that he had been given one as it was a ‘useless part” that would never be sold, and it would be in the post next week.

So we have one passenger side plate now. Need to get a nice wing nut to add for finger control.

I spent 24 hours thinking of buying an MOT failed Mk1 (no idea of he fancy engine numbers like 1JZ-U-xxxxx or whatever) Lexus LS400 and putting that in there.

But it becomes a different beast altogether.

Sticking to the MX5 engine and gearbox makes a lot more sense for this car.

It is so simple, and if beef is £5.00/kg at Morrison’s etc, and the dried weight is -50% it still costs you £10.00/kg compared to over £40.00/kg in the shops.

It is already that, but a well kept secret.

Ha! Better to be burgatory than changing the "chop chop" to pork chop, not keen on those...

Last day of work for the year.

Sucked a bit as customers were tired too.

Anyway, got an hour in during daylight, and before the chill and sideways rain told me to get indoors.

Still, happy with the little jobs done.

Started off by finding some potential steel for the windscreen supports.

Cut in half it should do the job.



Then the next job was to pry off the wiper arms.

Two screwdrivers do the job easy.



All off.



Next job was to get the motor and three actuators out.

First and second one was fine, thinking no 3 would be a doddle..... it was not.

Had to dismantle the glovebox/cubbyhole and part of the blower system.



So, dismantling, why do you have brass screws, mixed with dome headed gutter bolts, randomly.

Mr Angle Grinder and 1mm blade came out to sort two of them in the end.



And then needing to pull away the rotten dash panel to get to more of these.

Why would you use 6 screws to attach a simple plastic tub?



There will be more tearing apart and removal of rotten wood.

Getting the blower out the way in order to be able to unthread the wiper modulator was another pita as it was screwed in with a set of long 3mm bolts with double nuts holding it.

But I got it out, and then the modulator way.

Refitted the blower as I want to keep them for the Land Rover window next.



Next up will be drilling out all the poppers around the rear of the tub and filling the holes, plus filling the wiper holes and some of the holes in the dash.

Current status.



Also found an old rusted sign, see if you can read what it says, or tries to say.

A little late to the party but it looks 100% better just having the windscreen removed. Part of me wants the screen to follow the same angle as the door post, though it does look better raked back further. Having previous experience of old kit cars I feel your pain with the fixings, it’s surprising what some people deem suitable for use on a vehicle!
Video is cool, driving style reminded me of why I have the 100E; it might only have four cylinders but it’s still fantastic for stress relief
