So what you really are telling me, is not to use Stainless. 😉 Not at all, stainless is great, unless they need to be hi tensile or similar, I use stainless when I can. Just take minor (lubricant) precautions and you'll be fine. ........I am still talking about nuts/bolts

I'm pretty sure they are series 3 land rover mirrors, I've got a pair you can have assuming they are still OK, I'll try and dig them out.
Pesonally I would use steel bolts and copper ease, for both steel and stainless the main thing is to get a decent quality bolt which is properly graded.

On reflection I think they are Land rover mirrors 🤣

that mirror is almost certainly a stock truck part. A trip to Aghabridge will sort a replacement quickly and cheaply. Cheap enough that you'll probably buy a pair so they match properly.... I keep forgetting how good they are. But seems there were answers quickly after I posted. So what you really are telling me, is not to use Stainless. 😉 Not at all, stainless is great, unless they need to be hi tensile or similar I use stainless when I can. Just take minor (lubricant) precautions and you'll be fine. ........I am still talking about nuts/bolts I always try to future proof stuff when I work on it. So SS makes sense too. Thank you. Have sent a PM re mirrors. They look to be the right ones for sure. Interesting that the left one on the Rockit is also oxidised or corroded. Looks right James. And I have posted between posts too, makes no difference. Remember this thread is also a reference document. On reflection I think they are Land rover mirrors 🤣 Yup.... Seems they are.

In the mean time, I also got this PM on UKGSER Forum Rian,
I've a L/H and R/H set of MUD blind spot mirrors that were on one of my Defenders that you're welcome to. They'll fit on standard LR Defender mirror mounts.
www.mudstuff.co.uk/products/...nd-spot-mirror
I'm not in Whitstable any more so not sure how they'll get to you.
Let me know and if you do want them, just pay it forward. David
Looking at the link, they seem to be really nice. I like the idea of the blind spot though.

Made up a small chassis number plate to add to the fibreglass body this week. I will screw it inside the glovebox in the end. The chassis number is on the chassis leg as expected, but not very well accessible. I wondered if it will be visible once the motor is back in, and it has been painted in under seal. Nice to have the right tools. Thanks Bootfair. Need to get the RX8 seats out of the C10 cab in the garage to start removing all the motors to lighten the drivers side up. Also need to find out if MX5 rails can be used on them.

not so much the tensile strength that annoys me with SS but the galling, I find really....... Err whats the word, um....... irritating. Sorry I should have been clearer, rather than trying to be funny. I've had a lot of problems with SS galling on my herald base kit car project a while ago, not just from being over tightened but from being run in with power tools, bolts would lock solid before they were fully seated. Now I try to use a ceramic grease when I'm using SS fasteners as well just to be on the safe side of the galvanic corrosion. Dan

I can let you have a spare mirror head if you’re not already sorted. You can also replace the glass easily enough, for pennies. It’s worth keeping a couple of spares in stock. I’ll show you how to get them off when I come up later this week. link

Fingers crossed nonetheless

I think between kevins and me we have that one covered. But that is stupidly cheap for a glass once you know how to remove it all. The tractor is bloody nice, and tbh I am envious. Thankfully I have enough stuff to keep me busy. Is this what you mean?

Yes, that’s it. An Allen key underneath to pop the head off, then lay it in the washing up bowl and pour a kettle full of boiling water over it. The outer bead goes dead soft and just rolls off. Swap the glass and roll the seal back on. Five minute job.

I've just spent a very enjoyable few hours reading all this. You're probably expecting me to say "go for the Beetle floorpan!" but in this instance I'm not!
If it was mine, I'd see how low you can get it as is, get the engine and gearbox in and running, see how it goes and then consider more MX5 bits at a later date.

Talking about VDO gauges, came across these today, IIRC they came out of an Audi coupe that my B-I-L scrapped years ago. Any use to you?

I am really enjou9ng this, as it has pretty much become a team effort. Containing cost against maximising pleasure is the driving force. And your second line: ABSOLUTELY.
