wow all of sudden this build is moving forward very fast
you going to use the mazda dash ?speedo rev counter etc to keep it as simple as possible (in my head anyway)

I assume the plan is to fit the engine and box complete with all the mazda electrics and loom. Should only take a couple of days! Not sure, but doesn´t the mx5 has sub frames, that could be integrated into the rznrckt strategically for a proper slam?

It doesen't even list structural rust on the mot pretty rare for a NB nowadays. I assume the plan is to fit the engine and box complete with all the mazda electrics and loom. Should only take a couple of days! and don't forget to label ALL the earthing points on the MX5 loom so you can either extend them to the Rezin chassis or build an 'earthing loom' ...

NOT SO UNPREDICTABLE CHANGE OF DIRECTION.so after quite a bit of thought, and chatting to various people, including those who spend my cash regularly, and a dose of my own opinion and ideas, I decided to see if a £500.00 MX5 Donor could be found. And then ot happened…….. a certain member I have known for 15 years or so, offered me a deal I wanted to, but did not resist. Stored about 4 years in a barn……. Dusty. Complete, except for the catalytic converter…….. And 283 miles from me. Delivery in exchange for a cuppa tea and cookies and an hours chat. So a price was agreed, and two photos came my way. First pic absolutely sold it for me Second one meant that I could check the MOT history. Slightly better award winning photography. So I checked the MOT history. Note the low mileage. 68190 miles. Car was registered end of December 2000 A quick search, based on the registration showed it to be a 1600cc engine. Delivery has been scheduled for Sunday, given that all the planets align. I am sure those of you in the know will recognise who the seller is, based on the origin of the delivery road trip. Our very own KFW. So tomorrow morning I will have to cut down the body table and add wheels to it, to make it mobile as the plan is to park the MX5 under cover. PS. I always wanted a canary yellow car or truck. Of course there still is the free 1800 engine and gearbox in a container that mate Darren gave me. But this may make it easier And I love all the help and advice on here. So much stuff I would not have considdered.

You should also be able to use the mazda steering column and switches etc, they do it on escorts using a sierra lower column.

It's what I would do, also use the full loom and as much of the dash as possible from the mx5. Would save loads of time chasing electrical issues. Added benefit of being able to scan it with a obd reader

This ^^^ Using the engine, gearbox, wiring, dash instruments, column/switchgear, and anything else that makes sense to do, like wiper motor, heater blower etc. makes a huge amount of sense, but getting into subframe swaps and major chassis mods, with the spectre of IVA (actually the inevitability of it given the build is being done in public on a forum), is the kind of "project creep" that takes a quick, cheap, fun endeavour and turns it into a nightmare.

I thought you could add to an existing chassis but not take away? There looks to be plenty of room for the rear subframe to mount and give about a 12" drop. Or is it a points thing?

It would fail on points and as it is the axle can go to within a couple of inches of the chassis rails (and even further with a little discreate notching) if you mounted the mazda frame under the rails it would ride quite a bit higher.

If you built it and handed it over, completed…….😉 Have to draw the line somewhere. Not going that route. Too far.

Not at all in my scope. Keeping to what is there. Cleaning, strengthening and renewing has to be the way. Absolutely Glen. Firstly, I can see that everyone has a helping hand and ideas. However, the big swap stuff will absolutely not happen, all the Ford stuff is getting refurbished, renewed and rebuilt and refitted to keep the car as a kit-car from the 80’s It has to stay a quick, cheap, fun endeavour. Quick is restricted by my limited knowledge, ability and day job. Fun, absolutely still the case, and a learning opportunity for me. Cheap…….. Well, you all know me. My projected budget aim was £2000.00 all inclusive (price, shipping, parts etc) and the top end would be £2500.00 currently, impossible as it may seem it is near £1500.00 and we have not fitted tyres or bought the rest of the parts like new Ford brake drums, discs, pads, hubs, wheel studs, brake lines, bushes etc. So we need to focus on a basic build here, nothing heroic or even close to IVA or similar style build. .

I do not know enough about these things and to be honest, the minute you start juggling sharp knives you stand a chance of getting cut or stabbed. So I need to keep it simple, legal and safe. I am not going the Mazda subframe route, it is too much real world engineering for a guy who rarely uses a tape measure or spirit level. Sorry, I'm german, what does fail on points mean in this case? Think TÜV on steroids. But in this case you have limited points that you lose fast with modifications.

So mate Fil came down from Cambridge this morning at 10.00 to play and possibly sleep over, though he had a work appointment at 09.00 tomorrow. Seems yellow is the operative colour at this point. Of course it was Grizzmas too……. Gifts. He also brought some industrial flooring for the S10 which he originally named as the Rumblegrizzkin. Some money was exchanged for top secret parts with Sally. These small grids weigh 15kg each……. And then he unloaded the Sip welder NeilDD had gifted the two of us with. And with my welder temporarily out of action (we hope) and the Rezin Rockit chassis needing a small patch, and some gussets welded in, it was just perfectly time. The generosity of this amazing community never ceases to make me feel humble and fortunate, or blessed, whichever way you want to see it. I will update the work Fil and I did today in the morning, after bootfair. In the mean time, the Canary is out of its cage. Excited, YES. .
