Morning world.
Went to bed 10.00 when fire died off.
Woken 11.30 by John the one legged lodger banging my door. Bloody house alarm outside had gone off and main control panel is in his room. No battery mains backup with power out for 18 hours. Ended up opening masterpanel as no power on keyboard etc to try figuring it out, then going down to garage, got MX5 battery, jumper leads, some heavy cable and masking tape. Removed dead battery and joined up MX5 battery with a spectacular bodge including jumpers and bits of electrical wire, that shut up the whole lot. So today’s job will be to find a small 12v 15ah battery and install plus reset system.

Sorry to hear of the ongoing situation especially the freeze - time to invest in a generator (for the freeze mainly) perhaps ? We 'lost' two fence panels and at least one fence post ... very similar to our immmediate neighbours ...

Sorry to hear of the ongoing situation especially the freeze - time to invest in a generator (for the freeze mainly) perhaps ? We 'lost' two fence panels and at least one fence post ... very similar to our immmediate neighbours ... Expensive way of saving a freezer of food. Mate Fil in Cambridge texted last night. Just read your update. I have a 1000W generator and a van. Can have it at your place tomorrow if you need it. I don't really use it these days so it's no bother. Runs for about 4 hours before wanting a fresh dinosaur pouring into it but you could easily jerry rig a larger fuel tank. silent running so not too obtrusive, just give me the nod... Some kind people about.

Despite it looking romantic this was more born out of desperation. Fire, light, warmth. Easy dinner. By 12.00 still no power. But activity in the farmers fields. Headed out in the S10 to get a new battery for the alarm system backup at Tool Station. Cost £23.00 Sally on camera duties. Poles being planted. Maybe we can look forward to power by tonight. New storm forecast is called Franklin. Ooooops. Spending time at Sallys house to get stuff charged up. So no building time really but have stuff going on in my head.

As I've said before, my house is around 300 years old. So chimneys, real fires and a Rayburn. Power went out at about 1.30pm Friday, didn't come back until about 4.30 yesterday afternoon. Then went off again about half six, until about half 9. Didn't bother me Friday, I was at a gig in Birmingham 😄 Glad for it otherwise tho Don't know how people in new houses cope

So no building time really but have stuff going on in my head. That's got to be especially frustrating, as a solid couple of hours work would have completed several important jobs. Just have to really efficient next weekend

Hope it's not too NSFW!

The thing is with a generator you can isolate the incoming supply & back feed the house through any socket.

The thing is with a generator you can isolate the incoming supply & back feed the house through any socket. As an electrician that makes me cringe, there's a right way and a wrong way to feed your house from a generator and that is the wrong way! I knew a bloke once who had an ice cream van and when it wasn't in use he plugged it into his house to keep the freezer going.
As he wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed he fitted a socket onto the van and then made an extension lead with a plug at each end. He was always careful to plug it into the van first then into his house, however, one day the van was parked a bit too far away and as he plugged it into the house the other end pulled out of the van and fell onto the lawn.
He picked it up and couldn't let it go (this was in the days before RCD's and he probably had rewireable fuses), his hand was in a terrible state and he had to have skin grafts to make it heal.
If you are going to use a generator on your house then you either need a double pole (live and neutral) changeover switch on the mains supply to feed it into or you need to plug the equipment you want to support directly into the generator. Trying to plug it into your socket circuit to refeed the house is asking for trouble and if your isolation on the mains isn't correct (and depending on where the fault on the electricity supply is) you could accidentally backfeed the supply and kill the poor bloke working on it.

Rather than taking any risks trying to power the whole house from a generator, you could just run your freezer off it, a couple of lights on an extension lead , and charge your phone/tablet/laptop.

That's what I would do, means you can get away with a smaller generator and makes it easy to control the load on the generator. IMO unless you live in an area prone to power cuts it's not worth the effort and expense of installing a proper change over switch.

Thanks fpr all the advice on generators etc.
Certainly not something I would EVER try or do.
I do not understand or trust electricity. Simple.
Power came back last night after 6.0pm……
BUT……
Now my whole downstairs of my house is dead, NO HEATING since Friday (have a power shower upstairs that works) No fridges etc.
So tried removing and refitting every plug downstairs one by one in a process of elimination
Then removed all the plugs, washing machine, drier, radios, side lamps, chargers etc and still it tripped out the mains even before I could start refitting them one by one.
So stopped there. Had a glass of sherry, put more wood on the fire.
Have to try find an electrician once I have gone through a further process of elimination today.
Next step is to remove the downstairs plug circuit breaker, in case that is gone and needs replacing, in which case it could be a simple, affordable job.
But both my lodgers are here, one is an electrician at the power station, one was an appliances type electrician 25 years ago, and we will try figure this out in the mean time.
Surely it can be fixed……..
As long as John does not trip down the stairs getting his crutches or prosthetic leg tangled in extension cables coming down.

I’m sure between you it’ll get sorted. Tested breakers etc. All work. So it is in the plugs downstairs somewhere. Now need to find and employ an electrician to come look and find the bloody fault. And do the day job along the way.

I’m just in the process of having a multi-fuel burner. There really is nothing like a real fire, but also it’s just that thing (as has been mentioned) that you have an alternative source of heat & cooking. By the sounds of it Grizz, you would have been in a ‘really’ bad situation without your open fire.
