Bit of folding, Some holes drilled, bolted to the fender, and we will have the mounting bracket for fuse box and relay as illustrated before. That almost how I would have done it. I would have the return edge facing up so that the whole piece fits flat against the bodywork. Which would make it easier to bolt down.... Fit it like this: Gear lever looks promising My plan was two holes on the spine, bolted through the top edge of the fender. Fuse box finalised and two bolts on the tab to hold it, and it’s buddy that you have still needs to be cut and welded horizontally, then bolted to the step with short bolts. We can look at it all once all the bits are together, including final placement relative to pedals, steering and clutch/brake parts. I am sure it will come together. Looks like a few good hours today, then some serious rain by midday.

Quick bit of checking yesterday showed the base plate of the gear lever needs replacing. However, the question is how to remove the old and fit the new. Also tried my Paul Walker memorial knob, more gears than the gearbox actually has…….. Sounds about right for this build. Tongue firmly in cheek. Got home and my neighbour where George the cat actually lives, delivered a parcel. pedalcarjoe Ernie had sent me a new, unused auto dimming welding helmet. Thanks mate. Mickey next door had previously broken one I let him use. No idea how, he is heavy handed. Ernie also included some very cool stickers. Today being Friday means weekend, and hopefully some progress. Kettle is on.

If I did it on paper with a pencil, you would have looked at it and wondered whether it was a picture of a cat, a pastiche of Picasso's interpretation of the Mona Lisa, a part of the Eiffel Tower or stolen off a three year old leaving their kindergarten class. It wouldn't have explained anything

If you use it every day, its often quicker and clearer than a paper sketch - and you know if it'll work or not, as its actually to dimensions rather than sketched how you would like it to fit . . .

Rian,
ref the gearstick, you cut the old lower boot off and slide a new one over top of the lever with some lube this one keeps the muck out of the gearbox so is worth replacing
At the body end you won't be able to use the mx5 rubber floor boot, due to the fact it restricts the travel quite a bit, I would just rely on the cloth boot to keep any smells out, after all I don't think noise insulation is something to worry about!

If you use it every day, its often quicker and clearer than a paper sketch - and you know if it'll work or not, as its actually to dimensions rather than sketched how you would like it to fit . . . And you can't post a paper sketch directly on a forum. That CAD model was created from two separate lines for the pink and blue parts, and one extruded sketch(two rectangles and three holes) for the third. Making a 3D representation on 2D paper makes my brain hurt.

Quick thought, what about using some PVC waste pipe to make a floating tunnel between the gearbox & body? You could have the factory MX5 boot at the bottom & a rubber seal between it & the selector hole. Then it's just a case of using a normal univeral leather boot to make it look tidy? That would stop any potential fumes/rocks/spray/noise making it into the "cabin" (Yes I know it's a open cabin so maybe pointless lol)

A longer rubber gaiter would do the same job, and just need screwing to the tunnel. Add a leather cover over it for looks

Thanks for the chat earlier Kevin, Cut in call was a call centre, not a surgery. Have ordered the part, so hopefully another thing sorted. £22.00 which is a bit cheeky, but screwed without it. My thinking is some “wetsuit” material, any foam type fabric to make a lower boot and weather proofer. Then sew up a second gaiter to attach to the yellow tunnel from the donor, using,some,spring style attachment at the bottom and something to hold it together on the actual,shifter. That should work fine. At least it does in my head.

That would be much simpler lol This is what I was trying to describe. But thinking about it, a traditional long heavy boot, mounted to the shell upside down would probably do it as well. It would eliminate the need for the rubber boot to have a long throw. Wonder if I have something like that in my stashes. And again….. Kinda SNAP ! Not sure my finger drawing makes sense. Lower level green gaiter and upper level red gaiter. Cone with closed base. Enough of this. Windy and wet outside now……. Can I really be bovered to go to the garage now? Probably regret it later if I did not go.

Nice design nickwheeler If I may, what about change the fastening method Nick has designed and have it like the picture below. Cut the t-shaped piece at the red lines and weld to the box. Drill 2 holes at the blue spots and install Rivnuts and then you can fasten it from below. This will give you a clean neat look with the bolts hidden underneath the box. The box will also then have a mysterious flair to it with Rian winning bets as to who can guess whats inside the box...gents get your minds out the gutter

You've convinced me! It's slightly more work, but a much better part. The base wouldn't need to be T-shaped, just a rectangle which will further stiffen the whole piece.
The blue part would be better full length, as the fuse box cantilevers off Rian's bracket and can use the extra support.

Well….. What do they say about the best laid plans and all that? Corporate work kept me busy in the end, and in the end…. ultimately I popped out for half an hour to fetch a pull wagon chassis for mate craigrk from Uncle Bob the hoarder. He had agreed to selling it to Craig for £10.00 what a surprise. Sally popped in to show me the new doggy acquisition at Uncle Bobs, a rescue from a flat in Maidstone. Meet Bonnie, I was smitten. Instantly. So my total days productivity was condensed in this. The bed may be,widened, as will the track, to be used to drag stuff about at his new home. The afternoon weather also absolutely sucked, which was just as well, having to deal with a load of corporate Bolloxx and colleagues. Hopefully tomorrow will be a lot easier to actually get on with stuff and also better weather. Fingers crossed. Loads left to be done, made, created, tested and laughed at.
