I look at this car and think....”What a lovely piece of work”
Front view is especially nice.

I think these are very understated and underrated cars. In this type of condition I've seen them going for Ford Pop money but they're in another league altogether!

They're not particularly common, they only made about 3000 of the Barker bodied cars over two years, not many are left now in any condition. Rarity doesn't equate to value either, we paid £1800 for this one which, given that it's much more solid and original than you might expect at a quick glance, seemed a fair price. Compared to the price of other coachbuilt cars, £1800 sometimes seems cheap.

Filled the holes in the bumper infill panel with some appropriately battered and aged Marchal auxilliary lights, one driving lamp and one fog lamp, as it should be.

Liking the lights.
And you are right.
Buying a coachbuilt at bicycle money.....
A no brainier, unless you do prefer your jewels wrapped in bright neon Lycra.

I love a good honest survivor car like this. Totally agree with not restoring it. As you say, just make roadworthy and drive.

Great to hear that your not thinking of restoring the car...why would you!
Far too many many good original cars restored in my opinion.
Repair and recommission is the way to go.

One side polished. Most of the other side and the top to go. About 6-8 hours hand polishing so far, much tougher going on the roof and top of the boot lid as the oxidisation is much heavier. Made a start cleaning up the engine too. Surprisingly little in the way of leaks anywhere and the grey paint is in really good shape under the thin layer of oil. Sediment/water trap cleaned out too which was very needed, I had thought the bowl was yellowed plastic rather than glass until I removed it from the car. Replacement washer bottle fitted and a bit of a clean of the painted surfaces to help things along a bit. Neither of these things are original, the washer bottle is a generic Unipart item as found on Minis and Minors and the sediment/water trap is an AC item usually found on Jaguars and Daimlers.

Could you bottle that 1950's old car smell. I'd buy it!

Opening the garage door on a hot day is just excellent, the old car smell wafts straight out at you and lingers. There's nothing quite like it.

Love what you have done with the rust areas. (Wet), wet and dry to flatten and then seal (where the exposed metal meets paint) with wax polish... Preserves what's there and looks great!

A rough video of the car running roughly.
Key suspects are the timing being too far retarded, one or more plugs not firing, the hole in the exhaust not helping, and just generally everything being not quite as it should be yet. We're hoping it's not head gasket failure, though are aware this is possible, and will be doing a compression test to rule that out since we've got no mixing or loss of fluids otherwise.
We have had it running better than in that video too, this car just seems a bit camera shy.

It runs, it drives, it reverses, it stops. The problem was the blowing exhaust, patched that up and it was fine.
