Hope from now on you're going to grow some big mutton chops and wear flat caps like you're from Emmerdale.
Mind you it's probably gone all trendy since I last saw it. I assume Jack and Joe Sugden are still running the farm...

As long as you've got a decent enough trailer (with working brakes) an old series3 should be fine Whats the worst that could possibly happen with a Land Rover tow vehicle?

I do hope the requirement to shift cars is good news on the house front!
A s3 should be fine. Slow and thirsty loaded up but they tow pretty well. Just be sure to grab some snaps for the retros towing retros thread.

I had an almost identical spec series 2, with the low ratio and 4wd it will pull just about anything all be it slowly and using a lot of fuel.

Just make sure you load the trailer so there’s some nose weight to keep things in check.

Land Rover, not cheaper but certainly much more gratifying. Once you remember the ear plugs.

thank you chaps , what is the allowable weight towed with this ? and what, 20 mpg ? towing cruising speed, 40 mph ?

Legal towing weight is whatever the plate on the vehicle says. Most Defenders seem to be 3.5 ton and S3s are apparently the same. BUT, there are some about that have been plated differently. Standard Land Rovery nonsense. If it doesn't have a plate.... make it up? 99.9% of the time, if it looks right, no one will pull you for it. Looks like a reasonably well presented truck, and a Land Rover towing a sensible trailer with a car on it will cause no fuss at all so long as the lights work properly

What he says ☝️
Series 3s were usually plated for 3.5 tons on overrun brakes, 4 tons with linked ones, so you should be fine with it.
Provided everything is well secured and all your lights work, the fuzz won’t bat an eyelid.
You’ll be easily capable of 40-50 mph, depending on gradient, but don’t expect much more than 10mpg if it’s petrol.

I was going to ask how far the journey is, for short hops the LR would be fine in my opinion.
But you may be better hiring a beavertail for a couple of days and smashing out a longer journey at 70mph and 30mpg

I suggest it needs a 200Tdi engine conversion with added power steering, disk brake conversion, probably a replacement rear chassis / crossmember and a comfy seat conversion, other then that, it will be fine.....

For that sort of journey you might be best off hiring a Transit type van with a tow bar, I've found they are brilliant for towing and of course you can fill the van with loads of stuff as well.

If the journey is 150 miles each way, and you’ll need to do it several times, then I’d look at getting a man with a transporter and trailer to do it in one go. It’ll probably work out cheaper, as well as taking up much less of your valuable time.

hello chums ! well now its a bit more pleasant outside , i have had a bit of a tinker mit der temptrezz. the windsceen surround was missing a couple of tabs , so i made em and got some 4ba screws to pop them on ... i could then assemble the screen surround , after choosing the least scratched windsceen , se the neat corners , after i retapped the L shaped bracket .. and voylah.. i then tried to insert it ..right there ! in the street !!..... hmmmm.. yup ... it was just too big to go in . so i took it all apart again , stripped out the rubber bead , cut it up ,laid a bead of black silicone in the valley , and used the sides of the rubber to hold the glass from the frame ... its in , i got.er.done...noice. after that i started working out where the door cathes and window winders go , and ordered a load of 1/4 bsf and 2ba screws . in case we have all forgotten the old girl , here she is ... regards robert
