I don't think that would be too bad with the mt75 transit box as the 5th is a 0.Something:1 I have a 4.63 diff and 4 speed transit box so 1:1 in 4th and that is doing about 3500 rpm at 60mph.
Auto would be the way forward in something so majestic though..

Living the dream there. Always liked these. Looking forward to seeing what you do with this. If I squint a bit, it looks like the Grey Jag Mk VII I’ve not bought yet.

Ratios look about right for the original powertrain but as you say won't work with a more powerfull engine and auto box.
If you are using a jag zf box could you do something with a range rover tail housing and some sort of overdrive or even a modified RR transfer box.

I like that. It’s a nice shape already, and I think you can probably get the visual effect you’re looking for without actually cutting anything, just by revising the paint and trim. I have to say though, if the roofline complemented the bodyside swage line, in an aerodynamic “fastback” style, like a Tatra, that would look awesome. However, I’d think that would be a significant chunk of both work and change to execute properly.
Looking forward to watching this progress. 👍

Well ,good news and bad news ! Good news is the gubbins stacked inside laid out on the grass looked like this .. all the glass and frames ,all the seats, in fact also a spare red front seat back and frame .. all the detailing wood trim . nice domed glass clocks , which are luminous ! who knew ! i have read somewhere the digits and needles are phosphorus coated ,and the lighting was ultra violet , so only those bits show at night , how cool is that . body is not super terrible ... worst corner.. boot.. some lovely deco esque bits .. tool kit box was there with 3 whole sections full lol... i have no idea what these metal sheets are from...a lorry ..? drums are 12" so maybe sapphire . Of course i had to pop the seats in place to see... Then we come to the bad news .. tried to rotate the HEMI with the cranking handle, crank bolt was loose , so after it tightened up i tried but no go . got a big battery and hit the start solenoid ,no go ,starter was clicking and a lot amps were flowing ...but no engine joy . dipped the open plug holes to see what the fluid on the pistons was ..hhhmmm .diesel. so this has been stuck,, and left to soak with diesel in to free it off . so unbolted the red ,and the fan , and tried to find a socket to fit , its a big un , 1 1/2" ,found one , but it was 3/4 drive , and i only had 1/2 and 1" drives , then made the mistake of trying my biggest adjustable ,which slipped on full heave ,and gouged my forearm into the sharp rad surround ,....this looked very nasty for a while ,a 1/4" shelf of flesh built up ,but no external bleeding , its settled down now , just a 3 x 2 "mega array of blood blisters , that'll teach me ! so to end on a happy note , i found my inner terry thomas ... AHYE SAYE ,young lady , would you happen to be going my Whay ? regards robert

Robert - Metal sheets appear to be some form of a closing panel - they are handed so maybe closing panels for either side of the radiator / grille ?

you are right chris , they are closing panels after a fashion ..... according to nice chap on the AS fb page , they are the door inner panels ,which figures , there are the 4 holes for the winder to fix too. doh ! i should have spotted that .

Love the domed glass. This though, caught my eye too. Kind of reflects the profile of the car too. Little details.

I think I’d be happy with that.
You and Angyl have both bought cars this week that I’m envious about, and although you’re going about your projects in very different ways, they’re both courses of action that I could easily follow myself if I were in your shoes.
I love the gear selector on this. It’d be great if you could incorporate it in to the finished car if the engine and gearbox end up going.
What is the performance like with the standard engine and gearbox? There’s not much point putting loads of time and effort into them if they’re disappointing even when in fine fettle.
Is the rear axle a bought-in proprietary item like a Dana, or is it an A-S factory built one?

What a project!!! It's got so much potential. I am going to enjoy this. Good luck with whatever you decide to do with it. Bookmarked as I don't want to miss any of this restoration journey.

An option to raise the gearing, if a rear axle swap is too challenging, would be an in-line Laycock style overdrive. This kind of thing: link

You can get independent OD units - prop drive in - prop drive out however they are eye wateringly expensive - I've done a lot research here - in particular for the Jowett Jupiter which is under geared in 3rd & 4th - although their are several OD types in the market the most robust one is the Laycock LH type - its also happens to be the most plentiful & most economical in the market due to the fact that it was fitted in droves to the MGB - it would require some engineering in the form of an adaptor plate for it go on the back of the gearbox and the output shaft of the gearbox would require some modification but its all perfectly achievable and its what I'm currently doing with the Jupiter's - question is would take all the beans from a 3 - 4 litre brutish engine ?

I don't know what is different between variants, but the bedford cf uses a J type, which I assume is weaker then than the LH. Admittedly they only have a 2.3 engine but they are fitted to coach built campers which are pulling alot more weight with far worse aerodynamics. Pure assumption, but I'd guess it would probably be ok.

i had better pipe up with my latest thinking on the gearing thing . I think what i am going to do is get my bedford cf van box ,and mount it in the drive train back wards so i have 3 overdrives .....if i stay with the AS box ...
oh ,edit to add, i appear to have also bought a mk2 jag rear bumper ! it was in the Aladdins cave of bits , seems straight and chromey ...
wonder what that is worth ??

Result on the bonus bumper. More in the kitty. It occurred to me that you could also transfer the registration from the A-S to Medusa, to give you a nice plate on there, and you’ll get an age-related 3x3 in its place, all for the cost of the transfer fee. Your “use a gearbox backwards” would work, up to a point, but they’re designed to be torque multipliers, not dividers, and I wouldn’t like to say how well they’d stand up to the use. Running backwards might not be ideal for lubrication purposes either. However, there’s one way to find out... 😃
