nissan prairie 1.8 carb. Year 1987
Okay had a few issues with this but now is starts first turn, tick over fine on choke and when choke off tick over fine. You can rev it until the cows come home, very slight hesitation when blipping the throttle but can hold revs at any rpm for as long as you want.
BUT
When driving it keeps chugging and cutting out with a very little power.
Any help much appreciated

Sounds like a fuel starvation issue. Possibly the fuel pump not being capable of providing sufficient fuel when under load.

Thanks for the reply . . But
Replaced fuel pump with new unit, replaced rubber fuel pipes as they had degraded on the inside, new fuel filter too! That's how I got up up and running set up on drive with no issues. Did drive fine with only a minor stall. Left it for couple of days and won't drive very well but will run no issues on drive. Float bowl showing half full ale the time, cant check when driving though lol
I'm thinking it could be ignition advance /retard etc.
Coil, points although may be electronic not checked.

Most fixed jet carbs have a idle fuel cicuit, some sort of progression for light loads and a main jet, I wonder if your main jet is blocked, it would fit your symptoms.
Alternatively as the charge density increases with engine power you need more energy for a spark to jump accross the plug gap so dodgy plug leads etc could also be a root cause.

Update . . Bits not changed as nowhere local had the bit!
But I had a thought . . .
Car only had issues driving after I messed about advancing / retarding ignition. This was to stop a very slight overun when engine was turned off. So having another mess about with that today later and see what happens

Check that it doesn't have an in tank filter/ gauze that has become clogged, it does sound like a lack of enough fuel issue.

Okay update. . . Cleaned out main jet on carb turned out it was blocked. Also adjusted float a little.
Car started on auto choke and let it run with zero issue for half hour. Son gave it some revs and float chamber level dropped which i think may be normal?
Yet to take it on test drive, if it still won't drive under load will play with ignition, if that don't work will definitely drop tank and check for in tank filter.
Thanks for all the help certainly given me direction and of course hope! Lol
