Was on my way to the NSRA swapmeet this morning doing about 85mph down the M1. Just before the Meadowhall junction there was a large bang, the car dropped and I skidded across 3 lanes luckily missing everything and pulled in the hard shoulder. The O/S rear tyre was flat. I wasn't risking getting mown down by a passing car so I drove off the motorway to change the tyre. This is the one that came off. Its a tubeless tyre with an inner tube in. The tube has gone and took most of the sidewall with it. Few pics from earlier when I took it out of the car. Check the size of the split in the tube!!!!!!!!! That wasn't the end of it as the spare went flat too after about 5 minutes. I stopped at a garage and its currently got about 45psi in and its not gone down lol. Matt

Yep I checked them all they're all fairly old but they're not cracked and still fairly supple. Good enough reason to put the alloys on though.

Good to hear you're ok! cptsideways - where do you look for the date code on a tyre, I think this could be some valuable info for everybody! I was under the impression that anything over 5 years old and your pushing your luck.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tire_codehere it is.. the Dot code (department of transportation) is written in 4 numbers of which the first 2 are the wheek and the last 2 stand for the year. you got away there, those tires were years old.

Phew, that was a close one! Glad you and the car survived! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tire_codehere it is.. the Dot code (department of transportation) is written in 4 numbers of which the first 2 are the wheek and the last 2 stand for the year. you got away there, those tires were years old. Well worth remembering, when we had a wheel nicked off Mrs JS's Vectra the Police used the code to prove a wheel recovered from the local thief was ours!

Nasty one that, glad it tuned out ok for you.
Would having a look at the valves be sufficient enough to tell if it's been tubed or not?

The valve on a tube is the same thickness all the way down the part that you can see and simply sticks through the hole in the rim. A tubless valve "mushrooms" out as it meets the hole in the rim to create a seal.

F*ck me I didnt know people still put tubes in tubeless tyres, I did know one tyre fitter who did that but now he`s thankfully a florist or something. If the tyre is old maybe this is some of his handywork.
Makes me feel funny to be honest, I`m assuming it`s the Uno, you could have been killed, and I`d previously had the opportunity to weigh the car in, therefore preventing you from having the blow-out. Strange feeling.

Tubes go like that even if they are in a tyre designed for them, its one of the reasons high speed blowouts are less common these days, tubless tyres usually go down quite slowly.

Yep was in the uno. Rob its not a problem mate you didn't know its not something I usually check for either but will be doing in future.
This was fully inflated 1 second and complete flat the next gonna stick with tubeless tyres from now on i've had one of those go flat on the motorway and it was much safer.

Strange feeling. you virtually sold its as spares repairs... Twist of fate indeed, the biggest twist being that noone or anything was harmed Amazing isn't it, there seems to be a reason for everything... ...Might be different is some slow reaction joe public bought it of the lot... Wierd The van was a time bomb with bumpy tyres, no brake pads and wobbly suspension, both me and 'her dad' are lucky to have gotten away with that!
