GTI are getting rare, find a sheddy one to cut about or just use a 1.4 sport or others instead, yes the GTI looks nicer but you pay thru the nose for one and will devalue it these days by cutting it about.

TFSI is miles harder to do than 1.8T which has been done plenty (4 wires on AGU etc so choose engine code wisely to make the job a lot easier).

You'll need a gti rear beam if you want discs on the rear. I think gti front discs are 256mm so you may want beefier brakes up front when the engine output is increased as you plan.

I think you'll end up with an engine too powerful for the chassis if you go tfsi. It'll get hot inside that little engine bay with the turbo and manifold. The suspension will need work to cope with the extra weight of the engine. It might up end really nose heavy with that extra weight up front.

Maybe stick a 16v in a lupo or get a low pressure turbo setup or even a mapped mk4/5 golf rather than over power what is very small car.

I think you should aim to mimic the 106/205 rallye, nice revvy n/a engine in a super light weight lupo. Polybush it and add beefy arbs, front brakes and some coilovers and decent tyres. It won't be a rocket ship but you have so much fun in it.

It has been done & the guy used the DSG box as well.

I would imagine you can get the same power for a lower total cost if you go down the 1.8t route. Personally I wouldnt engine swap a GTi though as it's just going to devalue it.

Something different maybe to take a Z-Cars approach and go for a bike engined Lupo instead, I’m sure it has been done but it depends on how good at spannering you are?

You are going to have to start with a 3-4K gti, or a sport as suggested if you can find one..... maybe a stripped out TDI with a power hike could be just as much fun, go for the power to weight ratio and torque rather than willy wangling BHP.

My pickup has a power hike with a combination of intercooler, injectors, turbo etc and it’s awesome to ‘lay some coal’ when the boost kicks in....
