Hi - I'm slowly restoring an Essex V4 and need to check the correct firing order (aka firing sequence) because I'm getting contradictory information.
All the wikis say it's 1-3-2-4, but my photocopy of a Ford Technical ServIce & Repair Manual (Issued Sep 1965) has a diagram showing the distributor cap 1-3-4-2
With
| Cylinder 1 - front offside Cylinder 3 - front nearside | | Cylinder 2 - rear offside Cyllinder 4 - rear nearside |
Please do you have definite info on the correct firing order? Many thanks.

Deffo 1,3,4,2 According to Fords repair manual. I suspect whoever put it on Wiki is thinking of the Cologne version which is different I think.

Hi, It's not unknown for manufacturers manuals to have anomalies in them!!

Many thanks to KenB for confirming the Ford Tech manual can be relied on. I have the same pic - but yours is much clearer than my poor photocopies.
Fair criticism Nick! Yet here I am 'online' asking for 'expert' advice. Given the need for confidence in the answer, it took considerable time to find (and register with) an owner's forum which had enough sensible exchange!
And thank you Colin for your considerate balance. It takes the sting out of my apparent stupidity!

Hi, In the case of confusion from different sources, in this instance, check what the engine wants. Put No1 onto compression, then turn the engine over by hand until the next cylinder gets to compression, then the third and finally the last. putting the relevant lead on as you go.

I suspect whoever put it on Wiki is thinking of the Cologne version which is different I think. For the record, Cologne V4 is also 1-3-4-2.

Same with the Cologne, and also the firing order. Come to think of it, I think the Essex V4 has the FO on the manifold too? Clever guys at Ford back in the day.
