1991 Volvo 940 2.3 HPT Manual
Fancy a Swede, anyone? After coming to terms with the fact that five cars on my plate is just a bit silly, the last-one-in-first-one-out rule means this wonderful boosted brick of joy is up for sale. Recently recommissioned and now a very handsome and usable modern classic, this 940 was off the road since 2015 before I bought it. However, in my ownership I have invested much time and money recommissioning it, replacing bits and generally tidying her up.
MOT until May 2021
2 elderly lady owners before me, v5c in my name, two keys
Rare "full fat" 165bhp B230FT engine
155k genuine miles
Interior is immaculate!! This evidently has been looked after, not like the abundance of ex-builder 940's for sale. Half leather interior, black plastic, and door cards without any of the common vinyl lifting on their tops!!
New water pump, timing belt and tensioner
Uses no water, oil and the engine's a peach. No MBCs or remap abuse here
All auxiliary belts replaced
Oil and filter change
New fuel pump
New air filter
Faster than it has a right to be, boosts well and much laggier than the LPT
Solid and straight bodywork and underside
Everything electrical appears to work
Original Stereo, electric ariel and even a graphical equaliser
Rare 5 spoke Draco wheels, highly sought-after in Volvo circles
Good brakes, engine and gearbox with smooth working overdrive
Needs a bit of cosmetic attention to doors and bonnet as pictured. The doors have a few scratches, and there's a poor rattle-can repair(?) on the RHR door as shown. Sunroof paint faded. Bonnet shows evidence of something dripping on it in the past, which has eaten into the paint. I've tried to photograph all this as best I can. Upsetting really, because the rest of the cars clean as a whistle. These cosmetic points are really what lets the car it down, and was something I had contemplated having repaired. But I decided I'd rather spend on the above mechanical/service items first.
Clonks shifting into reverse gear from neutral, but fine if you shift from 2nd gear.
Service history is partial and incomplete. Original Volvo service book stamped to 70k I believe, although I have kept all the receipts for the parts I've replaced, and taken numerous pictures of the work being carried out if you're into all that. .
Bulb failure warning light is on, but all lights appear to work. I gather from reading forums this is more of a non-fault, something to do with the resistance of the stock bulbs throwing up the dash light, pretty common on 940's.
May need tyres for next year's MOT. They were only an advisory for the last MOT, and I have had them checked at my local tyre shop who tell me they are all legal. They just have a bit of sidewall cracking.
Clutch pedal bite point is quite high but doesn't slip and has not given me any bother.
All-in-all, this is a very clean, honest and presentable example of one of the most sought-after, top-spec versions in the 940 range. With a bit of cosmetic TLC this could easily be a £4k+ car. And with values of these classic Volvo's on the up, this car would make a great investment as well as a perfect practical classic. If you'd like a link to a Flickr album with plenty more exciting pictures, please don't hesitate to get in touch. Socially distanced viewings encouraged and invited.
