I'd say I'm sensitive to petrol. Normally one sniff leaves me with a sore throat and zapped of energy.
I'm emptying my fuel tank right now to remove it and end up taking a shower in the stuff. Instantly my arms and chest (I said a shower...) where the petrol went start stinging as if covered in acid. I don't remember it doing that before!

I doubt anything much has changed, I had a car in for work last month which had very old fuel in it which utterly stank, even when burnt and coming out the back it reeked badly.

oh there will be more ethanol in standard pump fuel soon but its been around 5% for a few decades already.

Slightly off thread but this is what can be gained from the interwebs;
Whilst it has been available for years E5 is a fairly modern thing here with the UK (Somerset?) taking part in initial trials 2006-2009 under the EU Ethanol for sustainable transport programme. E10 will be the main fuel from next year. For older cars E5 will still be available or for much older cars they'll need to run the 'super unleaded' offered by Esso,Shell etc as currently they contain no ethanol. Anything pre 2000's designed/built will have longer term issues as ethanol is somewhat corrosive to rubbers and metals used in systems of that era. Ethanol is reckoned to be 33% less calorific than petrol so likely smaller engines will need to use more fuel, so they'll need to grow more crops just to provide the ethanol thus the pollution reduction argument just flies out the window. Apparently E100 is available in parts of eastern Europe, mostly used I suspect for making garage Vodka.......... |

That's not accurate, super unleaded grades also contain the ethanol. It's marked on the pump now so easy to spot.

I have a car from the 80's, there's about 400mm of rubber hose on it, the rest if metal or plastic, plenty of ethanol safe modern hose available, as are ethanol safe injector seals etc, can crank on a bit more ignition timing too.

There has always been an element to fuel that is bad on skin contact. As a kid we were at Silverstone watching the racing when a driver rushed in to the pits in a perfectly healthy car, jumped out and started ripping off his overalls as he ran in the garage! In a post race interview he explained his car had been leaking fuel, he carried on until it had started to make his ‘privates’ stung and burn at which point he bailed out 😂
Anyway, point of the post is that its always burned skin, I suspect you are just getting more sensitive to it 😎

Esso site still states their super (Synergy Supreme plus) is ethanol free except Devon, Cornwall, Teeside and Scotland. Just got to look for the E5 badge on any of them as it is a legal requirement to display it. There is a garage in Buckingham which has a big sign saying they still do leaded, don't know if they do or haven't been ar$ed to take it down.

One other curious thing I noticed.
I threw the t-shirt in the shower to rinse it as it warmed up, then put it in the basin. After the shower the t-shirt was warm! Clearly some chemical reaction was going on. 🤔

A few years ago,supergreen used to contain benzene,until it was realised that the fire brigade had trouble in putting out car fires

Clearly some chemical reaction was going on. 🤔 maybe its oxidising as its drying , that generates heat bit like linseed oil , thats even worse! |

I’ve run a motorcycle parts business for 22yrs, up until about 5 yrs ago I rarely ever sold say a carburettor rebuild/service kit or fuel tap kit.
I know sell literally 10 to 20 every single day.
It’s a huge problem, the 5% ethanol is ‘killing’ every piece of rubber it comes into contact with.
Once it rises to 10% next year it is going to be horrendous

That's got more to do with the quality of the parts than the fuel. E5 is nothing new.

Once it rises to 10% next year it is going to be horrendous This is exactly right, it's even more of an issue in bikes which tend to be parked up over winter. There is now a reasonably big market for fibreglass fuel tank covers that sit over an alloy inner as modern fuel causes leaks in the originals. |

Uk fuel has had ethanol in it since 1994.

Oh, I wonder if that's why last time I ran the Sportshatch, the fuel pump was leaking fuel - perhaps because the stuff had been sitting in the bowl for some time. But, the Firenza has the same fuel pump and has had a similar rebuild kit put in it bought from the same place, and that was OK. If anything, the rubber hoses and stuff on the hatch are newer and more likely to be ethanol-friendly.
