Hi recently bought an engine (B204 saab) which I thought was OK - turned over fine, fitted fine, ran for over an hour in the garage fine. Took it out for a spin and it started to tighten up and make odd noises after 15 mins - next thing I know is BANG and the lump is gone. Pulled the head off - head absolutely fine. not warped at all. appears to of been starved of oil in the cylinders. Not knowing how oil gets to the cylinders what should I be looking for as to the cause? plenty of oil. it didnt overheat. Needless to say that the bottom end cannot be rebuilt! Another engine on the way.

Check the state of the oil pump and the strainer in the sump. You can see it's full of sludge in your picture.
One of the Saab engines is notorious for the strainer clogging leading to oil starvation. I would pull the sump and give everything a good clean out on your next engine before fitting.

I did know that, and had recommended others to do that too.
People do the oddest things!
taking the engine apart was painful - It was so clean and the cam showed no signs of use....

Just thinking that would be an awesome award for engine management!
I am going to award myself this 'Dunce' trophy to myself for putting in an exceptional amount of work on a 500 quid car, 6 months of evenings and weekends doing everything nicely only to blow it to bits on my first test run.
I remember vividly whilst polishing the alloy rocker cover to shiny aluminium "this engine is not going to be good - when has anything in the engine bay been tarted up in a really time consuming way EVER been a good luck charm for me and cars in general? "
Never! - I once spent too much on a chrome plated coil on a VW beetle. Damn thing was a micron smaller than the original so one day it slipped out of it's bracket, caught the main pulley and absolutely anhililated the engine bay. There were dents on the outside of the decklid from the force of the 'Pinball machine effect' - I really hope I have learned something this time.

That's the B2*5 that has problems with the PCV pipes breaking down leaving lumps of rubber in the oil to block the strainer. The B2*4 generally doesn't have any such problems, but as with any engine if it's been abused and had a complete lack of maintenance it will suffer, especially if it was also tuned and/or misused as the turbo will cook the oil. This B204 is definitely an anomaly but not the first I've come across that's had issues like this after being bought 'unknown'. I've not seen a B2*4 with a sump that mucky before. That rod is a thing of beauty though

The strange thing is the crank journal does not look like it has seized, on the con rod one bolt is shown as clearly sheared, is the remains of the other broken of as well or has it come unscrewed?
I was once doing Power runs on cosworth YBG on a very expensive 4wd dyno also used for emissions development we were looking for the cause of a strange ticking noise with microphones on the engine, under full load around 6000rpm it went from tick to a knock then an almighty bang in 2 or 3 seconds, conrod and piston had virtually cut the the sump and crankcase in half filling the dyno and with a mixture mobil 1 and YBG fragments, it cost over 10 grand to clean the dyno!
root cause was a conrod bolt coming undone.

I think i've said before but I saw a Bedford straight six diesel throw a rod after the owner had screwed out the governor. Its quite impressive when the engine is about 8 litre capacity and the rods the size of your lower leg. Apparently the early RR Griffon engine fitted in the Mk12 Spitfire did a similar trick and they were 37 litre engine. So all in all , good job sir you're in excellent company.

Is the knackered piston seized in the bore? It's a odd one that, it looks more like hydraulic lock damage than a crank oiling failure but from the photos you've posted the cylinder looks dry.

Was this run without water?
I've had a seized piston in one car before, a 944 S2.
The root cause was seen to be severe overheating, which tied in with the ropey cooling system it had.

The bore would be heavily scored up and the piston will be seized in there if that is what came to a stop, from the pic of the bore at that angle that doesnt look the case, but you wont know until you try and remove it. As it has mullered itself it is difficult to say what happened when, but tightening of the engine is a good sign it is seizing in the bores although not always. The piston has rotated in the bore in its final moments at any rate.
Your head cant be much good on that piston with all that metal flying about can it? Unless the piston stopped there. Any smoke while this was all happening? Fuel wash from duff injector maybe?
