Hi, all I need help with my least favourite bit of modifying old cars, wiring. I need a 12v relay to power a solenoid for kick down on an old auto gearbox. At full throttle a micro switch on the throttle linkage breaks contact and that's what I want to use to switch the relay on. I hope this makes sense? Is it possible? TIA, Steve.

Just to clarify the micro switch breaks contact when activated?

Is it as simple as use a 5 pin relay, 87a to your microswitch, 30 to ground, 85 & 86 to your gearbox switch ?... Microswitch holds the relay open until you floor it when then relay closes and activates your gearbox switch.

Most micro switches are changeover type I’ve come across - but a 5-pin relay changeover relay (not all 5-pin relays are alike) should work theoretically EXCEPT when not powered you will have your kickdown permanently on..so make sure you take your power (for the kickdown solenoid) from the right source - namely an ignition switched source.

As stated it would be safer if the micro switch can be re-wired for normal open or replaced with a normally open switch, that way if anything fails you fail safe to a non functioning kickdown, a lot of boxes won't like being driven with the kickdown permanently engaged.
