Morning all, I have a bit of an issue with the installation of the numberplate on the front of my Brat and would appreciate your thoughts on options. A simple solution shirley I hear you say, however all is not as it seems. As the truck was imported, it has a shallow recess on the front bumper for the standard 12in wide US plate. As seen here - I do have a UK bumper, however I'd rather stick with the US one as the truck wings don't have repeaters on them like the UK models and the US bumper has sidemarkers, which have now been converted to repeaters, which I need for an MOT. To be honest I haven't tried to MOT with the UK bumper and no repeaters but anyway, I'm rambling so back to the point. Currently the plate is screwed on with some random plastic wedge spacers (from a kitchen cabinet ) to clear the bumper recess edges but obviously this needs to change. I have a 5 digit numberplate which will be going on and as I hate screwed numberplates it will be stuck on. I was hoping to get a 12in wide 5 digit plate but this is looking unlikely as I really want pressed alloy plates, the only one I could get is 400mm long (nearly 16in). So to the point, how can I stick a plate onto my bumper spaced out approx 12mm so that it looks half decent and doesn't use kitchen accessories or a piece of old pallet. My initial thought was some square plastic / nylon barstock but looking on ebay, it's a fortune for what it is. Failing that, where can I get a pressed 5 digit plate that's no longer that 12in and still looks legal(ish) Your comments are appreciated. Cheers. ETA, I'm sure I read somewhere that imports are allowed different plate sizing so that could be an option, anybody know any more about this?

I can’t tell if you’ve used wedges as it needs to be spaced at an angle?
If not a pair of 12mm thick standoff spacers should do the job.
If you need an angle contraption I spotted a post by eva_resto on Instagram advertising number plate mount brackets designed to clamp to a beetle metal bumper. Not sure if they’d work for you or not.

www.jdmplates.co.uk/product/bespoke-jdm-printed/In the size dropdown, choose "5 digit" or "5 digit with a 1" option depending on whether you have a "1" in the numbers. The first option will give a 300mm wide (12") plate. Not pressed admittedly. You can get a legal plate made up in almost any size, depending on how many characters you have, as the regs mostly cover letter width, height and thickness and spacing, so the plate can be varied as long as the text is suitable. I *think* imports can use the motorbike font, which looks almost identical to car font but has slightly narrower specs. ONLY if it was not a EU approved vehicle and the vehicle does not have space to fit a UK compliant plate. The plate then could be BS marked and legal, but using the motorbike font.

I’m with ‘fitting the correct sized license plate’ crowd, if the recess is there for an import size plate that’s what I’d fit. I’ve ran pressed US import plates on my Cherokee from nearly day one and it hasn’t been an issue because I was sensible with font size etc so it doesn’t look wrong.

Those 300mm plates would be perfect, just a pity they aren't pressed as I think they add to the retro look. Definitely an option though, thanks for that.

No one is currently making ‘legal-ish’ pressed 12x6 plates with the bike size British font in yellow and white. You can get much-less-legal ones with american font, but personally I think they look cr4p. I’m after some myself and have had a discussion on one of the FB groups about other people not being able to get them too.
The previous eBay seller I got them from has stopped doing them.
The only options are- American font which is totally illegal in terms of letter size and spacing and will get you pulled pretty quickly.
Plastic ones in the right size and font.
Or pressed in the British font but way too big.

There’s are what I’m after, if anyone can find a seller still doing them. 12x6 reflective pressed plates with UK bike size font and spacing. If you have a 5 digit plate it can be legally displayed on one line, but you’d still have to find someone making this style of plate to make them for you.

Thanks for the info Dez, it looks like I will be going for the 300mm single line plastic ones from the link above. I don't really want 2x lines, but I can I see that it would suit your truck.

Ah no they’re not for the truck, I will be doing a 5 digit plate same as you. It’s another car I need them for.

My brother got a ticket for running a 12" plate on his s14 Nissan a few months back, also got told it wouldnt pass an MOT. Had to refit the standard one, get a note from a garage etc.

There’s something hiding in the MoT manual about US imports are able to have US sized plates - but that means the vehicle is imported, not just the bumper.
Being LHD is probably the deciding factor...

Sounds like the bag of bits you get with a TV wallmount: www.ebay.co.uk/p/18022996946?iid=263310313021
