Rolled the car out the garage today so I could move the engine/box to the front of the garage. This is all of the muck that was stick behind the filler neck π³ And there she is π just need to plumb it all in and should be good to go. I plan to start getting the bay chopped up as soon as possible to start getting the engine mocked up. I know if I donβt try and push it on it will end up ok the back burner like my Golf R32. That was a car I planned to get back on the road by summer 2019 π more updates soon.

Are there any differences between the 9A/ABF vs KR in terms of the block or is it just a different bore + stroke?

Well Iβve past the point of no return π
started chopping the bay up. Bit of a hack job but started cutting sections out to see what was what. Iβm waiting on some spot welding drill bits to arrive then Iβll separate the panels and clean things up. Cutting out this section will allow me to fit the KR in and compensate for the pulleys etc. Weβre I finished off as it was getting late and I didnβt want to upset the neighbours with the noise. Once I have my drill bits Iβll remove the outer skin start seeing how much room I have.

I wonβt be using the standard engine management for the KR and plan to go on ITBβs with a standalone ECU. Is there any benefit to going KR over ABF? I would imagine there would be a bit more poke lower down going with the 2.0. And thank you, if all goes the way Iβve planned it should come out quite nice.

Yeah the ABF block is a tad taller being a βtall blockβ as opposed to the 9A being a βshortblockβ. Both 2.0 though so I guess you could see it as an updated version. If youβre asking my opinion, Iβd say there wasnβt a huge amount in it if weβre just talking about the blocks but Iβm sure there are many peeps on various VW forums that will disagree with me (or anyone) till the cows come home Having had a KR and ABF, I prefer ABFβs but my proβs for that are irrelevant if you are going SEM (great shout by the way). Both engines have all their ooomph in the top end and a little flat lower down on standard management. A lightened flywheel helps. Keep the updates coming

I guess I will just stay with the KR as I already have the engine. I suppose the opportunity to swap the bottom end is always there if I feel the need to do so.
Thank you for sharing. Iβm trying to push on as much as I can so I can keep the updates flowing and donβt want to loose any momentum along the way.

Iβve already lost it for one project, Iβm not gonna let it happen on this one. Hopefully my spot weld drill bits will be delivered this week (before the weekend). Thatβll let me crack on getting at the rest of the bits I need removed in the bay. I aim to keep the updates flowing

Received a text today from the previous owner who has found some more history on the car. Makes me feel a little guilty about my plans moving forward as the car has so much history with it. But some parts are becoming hard to find and Iβd like to do something different. Iβm going to collect what they have left on Friday so Iβll update then

the ABF is a better engine, but the KR is pretty cool, my KR made 158bhp at Stealth a million years ago even though it had 140k on it.
I have some bike throttle bodies that i bought for my ABF and never used knocking about. The brakes were always the worst bit of a polo, but I think you need g40 hubs to be able to do a decent upgrade

I fitted Golf mk2 16v discs and calipers to my grey G40 using Audi carriers so that they simply bolt on to the Polo leg. Not sure what master cylinder you'd need to use for a mk2 Polo though. The lack of servo assistance could be a problem without a suitable uprated m/c. As far as I know, all Polo mk1,2+3 hubs are the same.

i think the non g40 ones have integral carriers Only early ones, the rest have separate carriers. 256mm Vauxhall Brakes are a cheap option as the Audi carriers to run 256mm mk2 Golf Calipers are getting thin on the ground.
