Hi all, as per title, I have some metal adjustable shelve supports like this I’m using an old wooden set of draws as the shelving to get me by but I want to do this all properly as space is at a premium in my garage, however I want to use the correct wood that can withstand the damp winter months any suggestions welcome. Many thanks Steve.

Used scaffold planks?
Edit, depending on how cheap you can get them locally.

Pallet timber gets used for many things around our place because it is free.

Marine ply, i had a sheet of 8x4 ripped into 8x1ft lengths at the timber yard (guy thought I was mad lol) but it means i get 32ft of shelving in my garage for £50 + £20 for brackets.

If you don't have stuff lying around and you're going to have to buy it, then marine ply makes a huge amount of sense. 18mm isn't expensive, it's pretty strong and you can get it cut to size and delivered as well (useful if you have a tiny car).

Genuine marine ply is incredibly expensive, you've probably got WBP/ exterior ply.

I've used Loft boarding (MDF or chipboard) for shelves/worktops, tends to be 18mm and cheap (relatively).

Anything to hand that is free and thick, mdf stuff just varnish the cut exposed bits to stop it going damp. I'd probably use old decking boards at the moment as I have a load of it here doing nothing.

I've used MDF loft boards and will happily walk on them, I've also used chipboard boards as tops for a work bench and floors in a shed. Haven't broken any yet, obviously it would make send to make sure that they are varnished, treated or painted.

I wouldn’t say that’s unhelpful. Get a bit of MDF, apply a bit of Milk,( moisture or water will suffice), and wait awhile. Voila a shelf that has the same physical attributes as a wet Weetbix, all nicely puffed up.... The OP did specifically mention Damp Winter months and didn’t mention anything about paint or varnish. Another vote here for Marineply. Not prone to swelling if it’s damp and less likely to warp all over the place than pallet wood 👍🏻

I'll add that I have used OSB & loft boards for shelves as I had off cuts, both do not fair well in sheds and do a very good banana imperssion

I'm not aware of any MDF that is designed as a loft board precisely for the reasons already mentioned, also MDF has no grain so if unsupported over a relatively short span will sag under gravity. Add in any moisture and you can pretty much wrap it around a structure. Even when I use it for built in wardrobes shelves I support it on 3 sides and add a vertical at the front to give a floating shelf appearance, otherwise on anything over 600mm it will sag without adding the weight of clothes.

I have some 600mm deep shelves about 8 foot long made out of old mdf shower backing stuff, battan along the walls, along the front, the ends and the middle with an angled support leg in the middle to the back wall, the mdf screwed down to them so it is in tension when loaded, varnish the exposed bits and it has been up there for 6 years with lots of tools and car bits and 25l drums of thinners etc, no problem.

Try a salvage yard, I've just picked up ten 18m/m ply boards, 1m x 50cm offcuts for £15. They were from theatre stage flooring. Going to be used as shelving in my garage.

Thank you all for the replies and interesting debate on the MDF, I haven’t yet purchased any wood for these shelves I will let you know when I do. I like the idea of a salvage yard that’s not a bad idea at all. I really liked the idea of scaffolding boards these would work perfectly but overkill for what I need I really don’t want to overload the uprights that are supporting these shelves.
I will post up a picture of what I come up with hopefully not to much into the distant future 😂
Thanks again all.

Hello everyone, I have finally got some material for my shelves. I was very fortunate enough that work pulled down some OSB that was used as walls, these was needing a new home so rude not to. So I went about varnishing these with some leftover varnish I had just as a barrier against the damp, if this doesn’t work then nothing lost. Here they are all setup already full of 💩 no doubt it won’t stay tidy for long... I want to thank everyone of you for your suggestions and comments they have been very helpful. All the best. Steve.
