For a while now I have noticed some old motors appearing online that bearly class as cars. Take this example of a fine Mk3 Cortina. I see an interior clock (if I even dare go near the interior), possibly some engine parts, rear badges, front indicator, glass and door handles. All for 750 quid. Can you find less for more?

So all they are doing is selling the documents for transfer to a decent shell? Easy way to make 10k & I guess if done right, very difficult to tell otherwise.

Or someone's concours and treasured 2000E disappears from their garage; gets a change of VIN plates, is resprayed, gets a change of number plates before being presented for sale as a 'recently renovated' barn find.

Now that makes my blood boil. I guess it's only going to get worse - can't imagine anyone would do that to a Kia Sportage in 20 years ....

Correct, it’s not a new thing, been happening for decades. I had a similar discussion at Goodwood last year with the guy flogging ‘Heritage’ Mini shells. I know he’s not nicked a car, but how can that be right? He sells you a brand new body shell & you weld in an old vin. It’s a new car!!!

Everything will achieve “Classic” status. The number of people who think so seems to decide the value therein. Rarity does not equal price. Supply and demand does.
Mk4 Cortina versus Mk1 Cavalier - similar size, market and performance. One of them in “just running” condition is worth the same as a very tidy example of the other. One has many more followers than the other too..

A brand new Heritage bodyshell is the legal way to do it tho, hence the cost of them for minis I believe there was rumours Rally Design were going to sell shells for Escorts, made in China. But they don't have approval for being a replacement shell like the Heritage ones

When my dad built his blue Maxi, it was built on a brand new bodyshell, using the id from the original car, and to keep thing simple it was painted blue (as per the original car), only a different shade of blue. There were a handful parts from the original car in the new bodyshell, but because he had easy access to a stock of brand new parts (the shed) the car was built with 90% brand new parts. This was fine, but afew years later he got hold of a 1969 Maxi, also in blue, and was tempted to put the id on the car he'd built, to make it tax free. He didn't because it didn't seem right too, but ive never been sure if that was the case. If the car, body and parts, were all mostly new, would it actually matter id the id was changed? Sorry about diverting the topic slightly, it just made me think of it. Have a rusty MGB. An early car spot from me, on the Isle Of Wight.

I'm not even sure you could salvage a shoebox full of bits from that Cortina!
Back in the 70s you could buy a complete body shell with trim and everything ready to go minus the running gear from Vauxhall, all you needed was a rusty donor car for the axles/engine/gearbox!

£50.00 is the minimum starting bid not the price although it wouldn't surprise me if there were no bids as everything useful has been stripped off. With the front cut away, lots of welding and bootlid, rear wings & ancillaries reinstated and an A-frame fabricated it could be turned into a trailer.
