Been watching this one for a while, was tempted. Now you’ve put the idea of VIP styling it in my head, I’m worried I won’t be able to resist!

When Hotwire started this thread I did what most of us probably did and scoured eBay and various other places looking for sensibly priced stuff and found prices have jumped remarkably That was confirmed when I picked up classic car buyer this morning, all the classic auctions have posted big prices paid for 90s everyday cars I’m hoping to buy something else soon but it maybe a good hunt this time....

I like the second Red one of the Corollas, just shows that everything has potential.
Had a weird liking for them, because they are so wrong, for a long time.
And silly cheap money too.
Suspect there are pensioner specials out there to be had, low miles, pogo spec etc.

My friend had one as a first car I spent a lot of time in. Thought it was completely horrid at the time, they're such an awkward ugly car and typically bland inside, but do have a nice 90's hatch look when modified. Guess it shouldn't be too much of a surprise, I remember liking the Corrola WRC car in Castrol livery.
I think they did a hot version in this generation but very rare and hard to get hold of. I imagine a Celica/Corolla T-Sport 190 swap would make them quite fun.

Bit of potential in these I really like that, don't think ive seen those wheels before, they really suit it. Dare I say it, a better and cheaper option to the equivalent Honda Civic?

Went back and had a look at the facebook post I found that pic from but it didn't mention what the wheels were. Do look similar to the OZ's though I think with those Corolla's, much like a lot of unloved 90s stuff, it takes quite a bit of vision to see the end result as they're not very inspiring to begin with. I think they did a hot version in this generation but very rare and hard to get hold of. I imagine a Celica/Corolla T-Sport 190 swap would make them quite fun. G6 or G6R I think was the slightly faster version? 2ZZ from a T-Sport would go nicely! I'm sure I've seen one with a 3S-GTE swapped in as well I really like that, don't think ive seen those wheels before, they really suit it. Dare I say it, a better and cheaper option to the equivalent Honda Civic? Certainly doesn't seem possible to get an equivalent Civic for less than a grand as easily given their popularity now. The main Civics that come up are these type www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1999-Honda-Civic-1-6-SE-5dr-a-c-Auto-Hatchback-Petrol-Automatic/124246681423?hash=item1cedade74f:g:-q8AAOSwoqVfAAfQWhich I think are more related to the Rover 400/45? I wonder if that means a VVC K Series or KV6 could be swapped in...

My Dad bought one of these when it was about 3 years old and he's still dailying it 17 years later. It started off in the vivid red of the top car and ended up pink with laquer peel / sun fade. With the VVTi it's reasonably quick and handles well, insurance isn't bad and it always returns 40+mpg regardless of how hard it's driven, (it does 55mpg when I drive it). It needed a new exhaust about 3 years ago which replaced the original part, it needed replacement p.a.s. tubing once and the radiator is 'bald' of cooling fins but it never overheats. The only thing he's had a problem with is the alarm which goes off in wind or every time a neighbour locks their car. With the back seats down it does regular trips to the local tip. Apart from oil, filters & plugs he has never serviced the engine in 17 years and it has never let him down. There's not a speck of rust on the car anywhere. I think certain cars are so bland in their styling that they become invisible. It's a shabby old Corolla, if it gets scratched in the supermarket car park - no sweat. If someone is looking to pinch a car he'll try every other car door in the street before he tries the door of the invisible Corolla. I think the estate version is a particularly good buy because they're as invisible as the hatchback or saloon; This lightly dinged 21 year old example has less than 100K miles on its 2 litre Diesel engine and is on for less than £900.00. If someone needs a reliable workhorse that's going to give them little trouble over the next decade this would be a pretty safe bet!

Small two door Mazda that isn't an MX-5, the often overlooked MX3. Jaguar XJ40s can still be had for shockingly cheap considering how much car you're getting.

I like it’s practicality and thn rareness too. Something interesting to add a bit of lowering and wheels to.

You've probably passed them over the years but your brain has failed to register them due to their 'blandness' cloak of invisibility! If the Chameleon Circuit on the TARDIS was working properly the default setting is probably Toyota Corolla E100/E110. Another Toyota estate that deserves a mention in this thread is the Carina E. Roomier, better specced and more comfortable than the Corolla these are very thin on the ground but don't sell for silly money. Usually the type of car that a sensible uncle bought they're seldom abused but, as a Toyota, they'd absorb that abuse anyway;

I certainly would not kick one off my drive.

My bet: Totally unloved luxobarge, dull as dishwater, but fundamentally bombproof and comfy enough. This barge will be hiking price soon, all the MR2 boys raided them for their V6 lumps. Try finding one now and you will struggle....

A friend bought a low mileage 4 litre example last year for £8K, I thought he'd been swindled but when I started looking at low mileage XJ40's online that was around where they were. Even bangers in need of lots of work are upwards of £1K. I think the X300 is a better looking car and they are more affordable.

I like the square headlights and don't think the X300 is as good looking BUT I'll balance that by agreeing the X300 is much more affordable and still seems nicely made.

Yep the X300 is a lovely car I much preferred my blue XJ6 to the XJ8 one I had though Probably something to do with the V8 detonating big style!
