Awesome! Second only to the 220 turbo. My brother had a 216gti with a D16 Honda lump, 115bhp and my neighbours had a 130bhp 216gti, same engine as a Honda Civic ED7, I had one of those too. Great cars and going up in value all the time.

I was working for a Rover dealership when the R8 was launched, left before the 2.0 and 3 doors were released.
Great cars and I had several 1.6 of my own and a 620ti so you could say I like the range!
Will follow this as you get it back on the road I hope 😎

I used to have a 5 door 216 GTI in the late 90s. My mate had the 3 door 220 GTI. Very nice cars to drive. My other mate ( yes, I used to have 2) then bought a 216 Coupe in aqua marine green, stunning car.

I used to love these. Was so chuffed when I got given one as a tester to replace the company’s fleet of Astras in about 1993ish. First night I went out in it it started raining, put the wipers on and the spindle was turning but the arm was sat still. Then about a week later the drivers door handle broke and wouldn’t open the door, a few days after that the drivers window wouldn’t go down then I woke up one morning to go to work and it had gone down on its own and wouldn’t come back up... Needless to say it went back with an erm... no thanks Rover Got to say it was a lovely car to drive.

I had a 3 door 216gti back in 2002 and loved it. Quicker than it really should've been and I did many pretty hassle free miles. It finally gave up when a drive shaft collapsed and took the gearbox with it. The only thing I always wished it had was power steering.

Nice find ! Keep the updates coming, these have aged well haven't they ? tubthumper IIRC Rover addressed the power steering issue with their own dealer retro-fit power steering option, about £400 from memory. James

I drove quite afew of these when I worked in a rover garage. Good ones were cracking cars, but they did vary a fair bit. We had one customer, quite well-to-do, who had a dark red one, NON metallic, black recaro-type interior, and I think it had the Honda engine. Beautiful car that, such a nice place to be.

Had a good look over the car today and only found one hole in the boot corner, Now about a year ago i bought a mig welder with a view to learn how to weld. Well apart from making a garden fire with an ark welder its sat there unused until today. So i thought with what the car cost me it would be an ideal time to learn how to weld so after watching a few You tube vids i cracked out the grinder..... I,l be tackling one of the rear arches tomorrow, I wonder whats lurking under here....

I rescued a 416Sli a couple of years ago - 19K from new on a J plate. Honda engine, once serviced and a new cambelt (very twitchy bum driving home...) it drove like a new car. Had to move it on; really wish I hadn't but SWMBO said so...

Always liked the rear window design on these! It's the second line in your post, but as soon as I seen the title, the first thing I thought was when did I even last see one on the road! Looking forward to seeing updated, well done for getting stuck in with the welding!

My bro’s 3dr 216 GTi beat an Escort RS2000 4x4. No joke, 3 up I was in the back and the Lone Ranger in the Ecky was mortified! They would thrash anything of similar power, Escort GTi (had one) same 115bhp but different animals. Stuck a panel filter in it and it flew.
Worth picking up if you can find them! The 220s are very quick. Watching with interest!

I had a Mk5 RS2000 last year probably a few photos of it on here. One of the most disappointing cars ive ever owned and driven. I also had a MK3 Astra GSI Red to at the same time and the difference between the 2 cars was night and day, Yet for some reason the Escort sold for almost double the price of the Escort. I'l never understand why old Fords fetch such high prices.
