I'm finding it frustratingly difficult to sort out insurance on a car I've not been able to use for a while. Company I was speaking to added an extra cost as the cars been off the road. I've never heard of that before. Has anyone actually spoken to Footman James recently ? They emailed me a quote and a lot of the details were wrong, despite using my previous insurance as a basis for it. Anyone got any recommendations of companies to try that aren't one of the bigger well known ones ?

Extra cost "for being off the road". Bin them!! Footman James aren't what they were.
What is the car? If it's a classic then you could try RH Specialist or Peter Best.

A lot of the time it's down to who you speak to I think. The company who upped the premium for it being off the road have been great in the past. Before I had to stop using the car it had been insured by Footman James for two years running and the package I got was brilliant. I mentioned on another thread their quote this year was over double which could be put down to inflation but I have also got a very dubious quote for £200 but that seem far too good to be true. Dare say if I tried to take it out tere would be a problem.
I tried Classicline who were definitely one of the best companies to speak to but the price was getting a bit high compared with some of the others.

I've used Peter James for a few years, started with bikes. Got my +2 elan and my Mrs MX5 on for about £300, comes with breakdown cover. Added my midget for about £30, no fuss. Never had to claim though. Think he is the James from footman James who went his own way.

The amount of aggro gone through when taking the insurance out is probably an indication of how things might be when making a claim ! Makes me wonder how many people aren't insured properly due to quotes being filled in badly.

I use www.greenlightinsurance.co.uk/ and have been very happy with them. Modifications that do not increase the power output are free to add which is fantastic and they've in most cases been significantly cheaper than most competitors. The people on the phone are always ace and you don't spend a month waiting for someone to answer the phone. For a bit of clarity I am in my 20's and for most of my cars pay under £200 a year.

If the car is not being used and you don't intend to use you need to ask for 'Laid up Cover' this will cover against theft / fire / accidental damage etc but not for road use and should reduce your policy not increase it

Hi, yes as I have already said I have already contacted you about cover but the price was a fair bit more than some of the other quotes I have had. I will add that the member of staff I spoke to was very helpful and it was a bit of a relief after some of the others I have been calling.

After going through all the details again with Footman James they have come back with a quote of £600, the current average of other quotes is half that! Oh and that's only if I join the owners club.
I think to be fair the vast majority of insurers have come back with similar prices apart from Footman James but the biggest issue is that they don't all put your info onto the quote accurately. It gets very hard work if you have to contact them again to change things only to have the price increased.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm trying for agreed value, higher mileage then on a normal classic policy and covering the mods as well. One of the advantages of the comparison sites is that you can juggle the numbers and get a better deal, not so easy with this.

I've been with Peter James for years, I'm just not happy that the policy goes up each time.
To be fair though, to insure the Herald on it's own with someone else is more than I pay for three cars together which includes European breakdown cover (always been with the AA and ranges from 250 mile due to spun bearings and 200 meter recovery due to very locked diff on a flat bed), all modifications declared, agreed value, unlimited mileage and commute on the policy list. I can't remember what the excess is either but I think it's £150 for the 2000 and Acclaim but more for the Herald due to the mods - we're talking 60bhp to 200bhp in terms of mods.

One interesting thing that's come up after asking lots of question is that although salvage of damaged vehicles is possible it's dependant on the insurance company and category of write off. If you pay to be able to keep the salvage or are told you will always get the car back it isn't strictly true that you will. I'm sure I have previously paid to retain whats left although it might have been before the categories of write off were changed.
Current favourites are either Classicline or Lancaster as they have at least offered agreed value. Best in terms of mileage allowed was Graham Sykes.
If I do actually decide I will update this to explain my reasons for choosing a particular company, might help someone in the future.

My struggle is over !
I went with Classicline in the end. Lancaster failed to email me the quote 3 times so I decided despite there quite being a bit cheaper I didn't want to risk not being able to contact them easily if I really needed to.

This is what it's all been for. It was originally a non turbo auto. The itch started when I bought a manual doner car that turned out a lot nicer to drive due to the extra power. Had it since 2005 so it's nice to finally sort out getting it back on the road.
