After much debating and contemplating, I have regrettably decided to test the water and put my 8 Series up for sale.
I purchased this over two and half years ago, with the intention of getting it fully restored and keeping it forever. However, life, other commitments and the current pandemic have made me realise that I won't get the chance to complete this any time soon.. It was stored at my BMW Specialist in Milton Keynes, but he has pushed to get it moved as he needs the space. Car is now in Shinfield, RG2.
It is a low mileage example (74k miles when I purchased it), and now on 75k miles. I have used it here and there, but for the past year it's been at the BMW garage.
To make it clear, I am trying to see what interest this attracts - I am not going to give it away. You will not find another low mileage, high spec example for sale.. If you know your E31s (and I know them well, also owning an Oxford Green 840ci Sport), then you will know how rare, sought after and valuable these are. You hardly see any up for sale, let alone on the road. Most have now been locked away as future investments.
I have made some enquiries with regards to storage, and if I do not get the right price for it, I will lock it away for the future. As this is a wide car, most standard size garages won't take the size, which I why I am putting it up for sale. Such a shame for it to be sitting around.
100% Original Sport Model - as it left the factory. Not modified in any way.
BMW Tool Kit in the boot lid.
'Individual' stamp in the Engine Bay.
High Specification E31:
Black Sport Leather, Heated Front Seats Electric Front Seats, Memory Function on Driver's Seat, Electric Tilt-Slide Sunroof, Electrically Adjustable Steering Column, Cruise Control, Climate Control, Sport Suspension, Sport Wing Mirrors, Anthracite Roof Lining, BMW RDS Stereo, Facelift Steering Wheel, 4 x Electric Windows with a Pillarless Setting, Electric Door Mirrors, Power Steering, Rear Arm Restraints, ABS Brakes, Front Fog Lamps, BMW Folder with User Manuals.
Rare BBS Split Rim Deep Dish Alloys - Part numbers: 36111181887 and 36111181888. These are worth over £1k as they are, or over £1500 when refurbished.
'M62B44' / 4.4 Litre / V8 / 32 Valve / 286 BHP / 310 lb-ft Torque / 155 MPH Limited
Mechanically, the car is decent. Starts first time. Idles in the correct manner. No fluid leaks. No overheating.
The M62 is a torquey engine, and pulls the big 8 along with ease. It has a good turn of pace, whilst making a nice, subdued V8 rumble. Pulls well in every gear, with no hesitation or power loss. Engine fan seems to always be on, but this is the case on my other 8 as well and does not affect running.
Gearbox changes as it should, and goes through all 5 speeds. The Tiptronic function works well, and Sport Mode engages as it should.
Suspension is tight and solid, and being the Sport fitment, it hugs the roads very well and feels planted. No knocks, no bangs.
Brakes are good and stop the car as they should. No shuddering or pulling. These do benefit from EBC Racing Pads to improve their stopping power (I have them fitted on my other 8 Series).
The tyres are all premium with decent tread, but they are old and beginning to perish in places due to lack of use (no mention on MOT, however).
Since my purchase in early 2018, it has had the following (mostly in November 2019):
2 x New 019 Batteries - Correct battery voltage is vital on these cars
New Radiator
Coolant Overhaul
Oil & Filter Service
Brake Calipers Fully Refurbished - Removed, Re-Drilled, Re-Threaded and Re-Fitted
New Brake Pipes
Fresh Brake Fluid
MOT (Expires November 2020)
Everything works as it should, with no warning lights on the dash. Pop-up lights (it's trademark feature), work spot on.
The car cleans up well, and is very presentable. However, it will need some paintwork to make it perfect. The lacquer has gone flat in several places, and there are a few rust blisters appearing on the rear wheel arches and on the sunroof panel, which is beginning to rot around the edges. Marks, blemishes and stone chips as to be expected. The alloys need a refurb. Windscreen has a crack on top corner (no mention on MOT). I had a quote for £900 (back in 2018) to get the paintwork and rust issues addressed, and around £450 to get the wheels sorted.
The interior is in very good order, but has wear to the driver's seat bolster. Everything has solid feel - these were extremely well put-together and built to last. The headlining is sagging, especially around the sunroof area (my other 8 also has the same issue).
The car has 4 previous owners on the Logbook, the last one since 2003.
It comes with: 1 x Remote Key Fob, BMW Leather Folder, BMW Approved Used Cars Folder and Purchase Receipt, BMW Service Booklet, 8 Series User Manual and Handbooks.
9 BMW Main Dealer Service Stamps in the Service Booklet, the last one being in 2014. There are then two stamps from my BMW Specialist in 2018 and then November 2019. If I were keeping the car longer, I was planning on getting a full Inspection II at MOT time this year (November).
There have been some periods in the past where the car was not used for a few years at a time, it was when the previous owner became a bit ill. This was between 2010 and 2014, and then again between 2015 and 2018, when it MOT'd again.
Service Stamps correspond with the periods it was not used.
When you spend a long amount of time in an 8, you realise exactly what these cars are - they are proper GT cruisers. Not designed for traffic light races, but are designed to cover long distances at three figure speeds, without breaking a sweat. The ultimate continent cruiser.
You can have Ferrari's, Lamborghinis or other super cars, but nothing turns heads quite like an 8 Series - everyone looks in amazement, waves, give thumbs up and some people just appeared gobsmacked by what they have seen!
The price for fellow RRers is £9995 as it stands with the BBS wheels, or £9600 if you bring your own wheels and swap them over. Please note, however, the 8 Series is a wide car, and whilst most BMW 5 x 120 alloys will fit, you will need some larger 5 or 7 Series ones to safely drive it away. It is also on eBay at £10995 firm.
It is located at my place in Shinfield, Berkshire, RG2 post code.

No time wasters, no dreamers, no scammers, no large groups.
I know what these are worth - get the paintwork immaculate, the wheels refurbished and a few minor bits and pieces sorted, and you have yourself a £16k+ car. A sound and worthwhile future investment - better and safer than money in the bank!
