Just read through all this thread, and wow, the metalwork is nothing short of amazing, I'm glad someone is restoring an LT and doing it properly.. not in the way so many commercials are "restored".. with patches over rust and buckets of filler :I Always liked the LTs, particularly the early ones, were never that common round where I lived when they wre current but seemed far better screwed together then the fords etc of their era.. and much nicer to drive then the pre sprinter Mercedes trucks... One thing i do remember, was having all sorts of issues getting them to pass MOT brake tests though, always had poor braking force, no idea why that was but could well have been due to the non typical type of brake tester they had in the garage i worked at. also looking at the South American LTs someone posted earlier reminded me that the cab was also fitted to a US built Peterbilt truck at one point.. of all things Thanks for your comments and taking the time to read through it all. I genuinely appreciate it. My dad, being a builder, had mk1/mk2/mk3 Transit tippers while a few of his work mates had LTs. Dad always said the LTs were a better truck, but the Fords were a lot cheaper and got the job done just as effectively. It funny how things change....the mk1/mk2 Transits are now the pricey ones. I bought an LT as they were still within my budget at the time. Thing is, the money I've now spent on this truck, I could of bought myself a decent mk2 transit in the first place!!

Yeah but you will have a very nice LT and not a common Transit. Not sure on values but will be a special truck. James

Great work as always Dan. It’s not the weather for working on cars. I will get to mine again shortly, honest guv! I had been working on my wifes car today but stopped because of the cold and getting stiff. Tomorrow’s another day. All the best, Norman Thanks Norman 👍🏻 Yeah, the cold certainly slows progress down. I'm sure I'm not the only one when I say that I can't wait to see regular updates from your thread once again. Progress was going strong, it would be a shame not to continue with it as you've done so much. But then I totally understand that other 'stuff' gets in the way and when you've spent some time away from a project, it can be really difficult to find the enthusiasm to get going again. But once you do, it'll all be worth it 👌🏻 Dan Very nice. That shrinker looks blooming heavy 😁😁.....yes...it's heavy. I thought the tent roof was going to give up at one point.....it's only thin tubing!

Yeah but you will have a very nice LT and not a common Transit. Not sure on values but will be a special truck. James To be honest, I still really like the Mk2 Transit...mainly for nostalgic reasons, but since owning and driving the LT, I'm more than happy with my choice and now wouldn't swap it for a Transit if it was offered. However....a less rotten LT may have a even better choice than the one I made at the time! 🤔😁 Dan.

Good to see someone who has a little motivation during these winter months - I struggle to even contemplate doing work on any of our cars over winter and I hate it. Every once in a while I make a list of things to do and it grows My Audi TT MK1 is going away into storage tomorrow so that might get some jobs done while it's off the road - seems very hard to do jobs under a self-imposed deadline of it being taxed so might as well use it. Then there's my parents' T4 Transp0rter campervan, got the rust done on that for its test and get all the new lighting upgrades done on that before the "away" season starts, despite the fact it's parked! Then there's her daily and my daily...

However....a less rotten LT may have a even better choice than the one I made at the time! 🤔😁 Thing is, just about any LT of this age is likely to be similarly rotten, or repaired previously. And depending on the quality of repairs, I'd often prefer to be repairing an original structure rather than something which has already been welded. My LT repairs have been very functional in comparison with yours!

Sometimes, others may not understand why you like a car so much. Sometimes, you may not even understand why you like a car so much. But none of that matters; all that matters is that you like the car, and having it makes you happy.

As always, thanks Rian 👍🏻. Yeah....the test fitting stage seems to go on forever. It's clamps, tape and tech screws everywhere! But, always worth it in the end. Then there's her daily and my daily... Yeah.....I know all too well about growing 'things to do' lists. I've spent so much time on the truck, that other 'stuff' has been put to the back of the list.....but there's new tasks being added all the time 🙄. One thing I really struggle with is working on my daily. Probably because I have absolutely no interest in it what so ever. As long as it starts and gets me to work I'm happy. Like you with your Mk1 TT, I thought I'd do a few jobs to the truck while it was off the road. That was just over two years ago......and look at now! 😁😁 However....a less rotten LT may have a even better choice than the one I made at the time! 🤔😁 Thing is, just about any LT of this age is likely to be similarly rotten, or repaired previously. And depending on the quality of repairs, I'd often prefer to be repairing an original structure rather than something which has already been welded. My LT repairs have been very functional in comparison with yours! Yeah, you're right. Most LTs I've seen have hidden rust issues. I see alot of LTs for sale that claim to have solid chassis but have slight bubbles in certain areas that I now know are the double skin areas. Knowing that they rust from the inside out, it's highly unlikely that they are as solid as they say they are. Just before Christmas, I took a few parts off of a tipper being broken locally to me. The chassis was almost as bad as mine was with the exception of being untouched by botched up MOT work.....unlike mine! Gotta say though....the cab was alot better than mine was. It didn't need any work to the roof or floor pans which was a surprise.

I've had a situation where I needed to do some shrinking in a weird spot too, and this is what I came up with. Changed it into a hand held shrinker (temporary, just for that one job) It was a bit heavy and awkward, but it worked...

I've had a situation where I needed to do some shrinking in a weird spot too, and this is what I came up with. Changed it into a hand held shrinker (temporary, just for that one job) It was a bit heavy and awkward, but it worked... Brilliant!!.....if I had the money, I'd buy doubles of some of my tools just so that I could modify them for specific tasks. I know what you meant about the weight of the smaller shrinker/stretchers.....they are surprisingly heavy. "Necessity is the mother of invention" I couldn't of said it better myself 👍👍 Right.....might as well continue to catch up with my updates. Now......this next part was a bit painful. It's one of those situations where if it's not done now, it'll come back and bite you on the backside at a later date. I'm talking about the main structural bar/panel that runs across the front of the truck. I could see that it was rusty and needed attention, but it sits under the front panel. There was almost nothing wrong with the front panel, but it had to come off. I didn't try and save it as front panels are available for these LTs....through the right channels! I found myself having to give in and join Facebook, as the chap selling them wouldn't deal with me unless I had my own Facebook account. I felt quite proud of myself up until this point for not doing so for all those years. Not saving the front panel was a decision I'd later regret, due to the poor quality of the new panel. It was removed a while before any of the cab work was done, but I thought now would be a good time to mention it as you might wonder where it had gone when reading the rest of todays update....if you know what I mean. Some pictures of when I removed it.....not many unfortunately........ So.......we go back to finishing what was started in a previous update. This bit...... While cutting away parts of this area, I notice that the rot had travelled up the seam between the door shut and the wing. So I ordered a new wing for £65 and removed the original one... Then finish that repair....... While I was there , I finished/went back over the welds on the step that I wasn't happy with the first time round...... Then once everything had been de-rusted...blasted....and degreased ( sorry...no picture evidence of this....but it was definitely done )...it was on with a few coats RustBusters Epoxy Mastic.... Key up the back side of the new wing and splat some on there..... Then once it had 24 hrs to dry, on went some topcoat..... Then on to some trail fitting of the new front wing.... ......and that's where I'm going to leave for today, as once again I am tasked with tonight's dinner!! Thanks for looking in.... Dan. . . . . But hold on there just a moment......this week has seen me getting involved in something non car related. I feel compelled to show it off here due to a certain cake munching, tea drinking fellow forum member...... teaboy Now 15/16 weeks ago, my name was added to list of peoples names that decided that 'we' ( most of my work colleague's ) should all have ago at our own version of ' The Great British Bake Off '. Each week, someone on the list would bake sweet or savoury treats for the rest to judge. All voting is kept under wraps until the end, where one of us will be declared the winner!! It's been a lot of fun and there's been some exceptional bakes. I was number 14 on the list......last week was my turn. I went with chocolate éclairs. Choux pastry with a vanilla and white chocolate crème patisserie filling and a milk chocolate glaze to top them off.....all homemade of course. I made 29 of them and as you can see, they started to disappear quickly......which was a good sign. And a close up.....especially for Mr Tea The results are due in the next few weeks Anyway.....enough of that.....I shall now pass all cake related matters back to Mr Tea 👍 That really is all for now folks....more soon. Dan.

Are these from Arek? I was wondering what they were like. Yes....it was Arek that sold it to me. I've had a quick look through the Facebook group to see if anyone else has had the same or other issues with them...but I can't see anything. First off...it had a blinking great dent right in the middle and right on the swage line. I'll assume that was done in delivery. The indicator reliefs on both sides were not formed properly. Especially the thin part that's under the indicator. Also, there was a stress dent just before the indicator relief on the left hand side. That had to be shrunk out. The worst thing was that when I clamped down on one side, the other side popped up by a few inches and was way out of line. Then as you try and force the popped up side down, it would buckle in the middle and form a huge dent all the way across the front. It took a LOT of work to get it the right shape and sitting correctly. Now....I understand that a bad panel is better than no panel, but when I had the opportunity to save the original, I was a bit gutted. Especially as it took we way longer to sort the new panel than it would of done to unpick the spot welds on the original. Maybe I was just unlucky with the one I received....I think I had the Friday afternoon version! 🙄🙄😄😄

Todays update brings you something I like to do the most......and that is making outer body panels. Next, task was to sort the left hand rear of the cab corner. When I originally removed it, I was going to cut it lower down, but after peering up under and seeing the state of it on the inside.....I went higher. The cab corner has something which I believe to be called a 'Dutch fold' running down the entire length of where it meets the rear bulkhead panel. It's basically folded round and tack welded in about five places. So getting it off was easy enough. This is the area in question... Once I got trimming, there wasn't a lot of it left..... This is the piece with the 'Dutch fold'.....in true Lloyd style.....rotten of course.... So.....lets make a new piece..... Mark it out..... Using this...... To do this...... Now, I'll let you into a little secret.....I rejected this one as I felt it wasn't good enough. Not only that, but I needed to make it with a wider piece of steel, as I needed it to curve it round at the bottom to form part of the lower panel. Unfortunately.....in true CommyCouper style, I got so involved with it, that I forgot to take photos! A test fit of Mk2......... Which I was happy with, but had failed to notice that about an inch and a half down from the trim line was where the Dutch fold seem starts to curve in towards the top of the cab. As you can see in the last picture, I had to stretch the Dutch fold out to get it to trail fit. So an easy fix was the slit it, bend it, then weld it up again......like this..... ......and while I was there, I started tack welding the new panel to the what was left of the original...... Then onto the lower part of the the corner. A new piece of steel was cut and marked up ready for folding..... Some folding then happened....... Some more fitting......this didn't happen just the once, but involved a lot of walking back and forth from the tent to the garage...and back again.... to make adjustments. Then remove the whole thing and take it to the bench...... More trail fitting....... Which highlighted this gap between the new panel and the new arch....... The problem was with the arch. so whip it it off and adjust it. Till it looks like this....... Back to the bench for its final construction...... Now....I'm 100% certain that I took more photos than this when fabricating this piece......but do you think I can find them?😡😡......I can only apologize. Anyway, after a lot of working things out and what seemed like endless welding and grinding.....this happened.... Then stick it on the truck and see what it looks like...... It took a while, but I was pleased with how that came out. I'd later go back and take the low spot out that you might be able to see on the curve of the panel. That's all for today folks. As always, thanks for looking in. Dan.
