So I need to insure my mgf again 2000 miles if that up to early October although I pay for a year Anyone recommend a good company? Currently it’s with footman James And it’s not a a lot cheaper than my modified cars!! Had a couple of quotes but dearer than the £156 I’m paying At 52 years of age I’m still thinking that’s too much?? I do have deep distrust of car insurers I don’t believe all that “we love classic cars” bumph so any good feedback will help, I’ve got three cars insured with different insurers at the moment due to the diversity of the cars I know this site has a preferred insurer but they haven’t been able to quote me sensible prices Any recommendations?

Have you tried the usual comparison sites?
My modern daily is standard and hic, who I've got my heavily modified golf with, were hundreds more than people like lv, tesco etc.

I’m using Greenlight insurance. They have been fantastic with me and I have no complaints. That said I am a fair few years younger than you and I am insuring modifies cars, so they may be no good for you but might be worth a try. From memory they charge me £120 P/A on my Porsche. My MR2 was about the same as well.

Dan - I'm a strong believer in you get what you pay for - cheap insurers are cheap for a reason - so is the service when it all goes wrong - I've been insuring my classics for 40 + plus years and have never come across another company has Hagerty - they only insure classics and nothing else which means that when the roof blows off the house in the next street or Mrs Smiths dog creates a £3k vet bill for being overfed & fat it does not effect your classic insurance premium - now I don't think they are in the market of quoting the cheapest rates or undercutting others - but for the last 10 years they have always been very fair with me - I normally insure 2 classics with them on agreed values with European cover & RAC cover included for sub £250 - and when it all goes wrong making a claim was has simple as calling them - some details down the phone and I e mailed them a few pics - done - no forms / no messing - the real acid test of a insurer is how well they pay out / instruct on a repair - well I've repaired 2 clients classics through Hagerty - nothing could have been simpler - no bun fights / no arguments when I told them the complete vehicle would have to be painted to attain the correct colour match etc - and they paid me within a week of invoice being submitted in both cases - obviously I cant recommend them enough - Chris www.hagerty.co.uk/

Have you done all the comparison sites? Bought our youngest a car last month or so (from neighbour so no unnecessary journey) and for exactly the same policy it was £50 cheaper on confused.com than gocompare. (Same company, same everything)

Try Saga, if it's standard. The MGF and MX5 are both mid life treat cars, that they are very used to with their customer base. I had the MX5 treat in my 50's!

I know this site has a preferred insurer but they haven’t been able to quote me sensible prices I'm surprised, I put my Dad onto Classicline and I believe he now has 3 classics & his (20yr old) daily insured with them now, (and he's as tight as the proverbial gnat's chuff!)

Cheapest isn't necessarily best - look at the detail of the cover and the claims history of the company- comparison sites often don't include these factors . . . .

Some additional opinions:- Royal & Sun Alliance; I had a dippy blonde* drive into the side of my Aerodeck a few years back as she didn't understand the junction priorities. All the repairs were going to be at her expense but, as she was initially contesting liability, and I needed the car I had it repaired by my insurer. Their approved repairer botched the job, (Griffin Mill @ Upper Boat), R&SA stonewalled my complaints and I had to get an independent engineer's report and take it up with the Insurance Ombudsman which dragged on for about 18 months before they were required to compensate me. They were horrendous to deal with. I would suggest you avoid them like COVID-19! (* She nearly T-boned me on the same junction on further occasions as she hadn't learned from the first shunt).
Carol Nash; my Dad used them for a few years for his classics. Every renewal they'd send out his quote with half the details incorrect and the premium loaded by about 25%, he'd usually have to make half a dozen increasingly irate calls talking to morons before they set things somewhere near right.

I’m not sure if your car will fall into their definition of classic but I have been with RH for my classics for about 15 years, limited mileage, guaranteed buyback, agreed value with club assessment, etc, etc - I pay about what you’re paying now, for two cars on the same policy.

Graham Sykes insured my RX7 for less than half of the nearest quote, including breakdown and legal. Their staff are really helpful and the breakdown service is excellent, no man in van confirming what you already knew just an immediate flatbed.

Graham Sykes have helped me in the past but I have also used Footman James. Sykes are still working although I can't get in contact with Footman James at the moment. I don't seem to be able to get any insurance for less than £200 whatever it is.
