Funny how things can change quickly My wife and I want to take my son and his girlfriend to the snow this year. My son's GF has never seen snow!! We are traveling in our Patrol with slide on camper. My son has a BMW Coupe. Not much of a 4WD. So we started looking at a 4WD and found this thing for only $2000 It was a little dirty but after a good scrub and new wheels and front bar it came up alright. Then in a moment of silliness I put it up for sale for $8250. I sold it within a few hours...... So, holiday money is no problem anymore... We started looking for a new project. I found this thing for $1700 but got it for $1300 I found some new wheels and tires. It looks now like this. It's not washed or polished yet. The bonnet needs some love but we are very happy with it so far.

Plans are: Give it a very good clean, Maybe get the bonnet painted Put a bed in the back Find a cheap nudge bar If I can find a nudge bar I will install some LED driving lights. We live a little rural and have these massive rabbits jumping around at night. Bit of extra light will be handy. Replace the radio Might get a UHF. So we can chat on the way up to the snow.
Any suggestions?

Have you found the picnic table? These are great cars, such light steering to drive too. Window motors are a common fault so keep them siliconed. That tail gate is a great design too 👍

I'm a fan of these RD1 CRVs since I got mine! Quite ahead of their time with the whole car-based SUV thing in 1995 (OK Matra beat them to it by quite a few years but still). Do you know if the rear diff oil has been changed? They're a clever design but apparently quite fussy and benefit from a change as they don't get used during normal driving. The oil isn't cheap but less expensive than a busted diff. Hope you have fun with it!

I have no (maintenance) history of the car at all. The seller told me that all services were up to date. But he had no proof. In his defense, coolant is clean and red. When I swapped the wheels I noticed that the brake pads were fairly new, the shocks are replaced in the recent past. It looks like a normal maintained car. All tires were evenly worn. But I will follow up on the diff.
How does this 4WD/AWD system work? (I could use Google as well of course)

It’s a 2x4 system (think that’s how it’s referred too) it’s FWD until the front loses traction then it engages the 4wd.
I’ve got a MK2 and it’s works surprisingly well! Never got stuck in the snow or when I’ve been off road (nothing extreme but muddy enough a normal car would get stuck)

The 4x4 system is a bit odd -there is an oil pump system that engages the rear diff once there is a Speed differential between the front and rear diffs. Anyway changing the rear diff oil is a bit of a faff with emptying it filling it running it then draining it again etc. but not technically difficult ! James

I will read up on that rear diff thing. I have read a fair bit of it. I understand that maintenance is very important on these diffs.

My tame mechanic who services my daily 2012 CRV (aka the fridge as its white and the aircon works unlike all my other cars), recommends changing the oil in these every 2 yrs, he's run them personally since the 90's as his family wagons and has never had any issues with the diff's. But they are the only real known 'issue' on these if not looked after. This is what you need... Diff flush kit

The former owner was not very tall. So, the roof was often hosed of but not washed.... It's now polished and clean. Today I installed roof racks. Mainly because I like the looks.

I also dropped the car of to get the bonnet painted. It should be done by Tuesday or so.
There are round holes in the bumper bar. My car is a base model and doesn't have the driving lights or mist lamps in the bar. However I still have the old Pajero bar. I am going to have a look and see if I can make the Pajero lights fit.

Hello all, My bonnet got painted. The car looks much better. But I can't show you a photo of the car yet as when I picked it up and drove passed my mechanic to pick up some trailer wheels, my ignition coil decided to die in front of his workshop. I am picking up the Honda tomorrow and will make some new photo's. I also picked up a tow bar for it. I might install that over the weekend. I understand that this is just a matter of bolting it up, all holes are already there. We will see.

Nice!! Been looking at these as potential kayak hauler/parts chaser etc as can't justify full size 4x4 however much I',d like to. These seem a decent compromise.

I can give some advice about the rear diff thing based on the CRV my Dad had, which would be a Mk2 CRV/2004.
When driving, if you go full lock (either right or left) the car can shudder with a rubbing sound. This indicates that there are (I think) clutches in the rear diff. The oil is old so the clutches are struggling.
The fix for this is to have the car up on a ramp, empty the oil, fill it with the new stuff. You then put the car in drive and rev the car to (I think) about 2,000rpm. The ABS will start screaming but ignore it. You then drain the oil after 5 minutes of this, refill, and repeat this step. Once finished drop the oil and refill. That's it done. Then change the oil at about every 20/30k.
There is a service bulletin about this as it's a known fault with the CRV.

I did read up on the above. It appears that my car has been serviced well. As non of that is happening. However, I will service the rear diff soon. Just to be safe.
But the first thing I am going to do is finding what the rattle in the back is. It sounds like something is hitting something. But everything looks great and noting indicates that this is the case. I will remove the spare and all lose things I can find in the back. If that doesn't do anything I am loosing up the exhaust get it it's hangers and tie it p with a bit of wire. Take it for a test run. If it's gone I will replace the exhaust rubbers. If it's not gone I can put the exhaust back and keep looking. It's not related to the speed or revs of the car but it's worse on rough roads. It might be the stabilizer pins. Will see.

I found it.... I took out my spare wheel, jack, table, everything that could rattle. Still rattling. I drove a little bit with the tail gate open. Still rattling. I took my wife for a spin. She sat in the back. She did hear it too, but could not identify where the rattling came from. I had enough and parked the car. Walking to the garage passed the car I knew what I missed and had not thought of.... These things; I installed these roof racks but did not secure the bar across. It's all tight now and rattling in the back is gone. Now I need to check my lower ball joints. The top ones appear to be okay.
