Great progress, you xoing a better job than many who call themselves pros! I can only fully agree with kevins, To my mind, if you are, as you say, "learning as you go along" I can't wait to see your future projects when you "know what you're doing" Excellent work Norman, Nigel

I have had a read through this thread from the start and I have come to the conclusion that I am deranged. I should have evaluated the car better initially and scrapped it. Anyhow I am on the home straight now. I keep hoping that “this is the last bit if welding” but no there is more. I will keep at it till it’s finished or I snuff it, whichever comes first. All the best, Norman

All the best, Norman I think most of us should probably have just scrapped our projects rather than struggling on with them, but if we did then we’d have nothing to read about, and no words of advice for other lunatics enthusiasts. What is quite noticeable, from the start of this project to now, is how neat your repairs have become. If you’re not careful you’ll celebrate getting to the “end of the welding” by starting again with some of the earlier stuff…🤣🤣

Hi Glen, Yes I have already gone back over some previous repairs. Some bits I wasn’t happy with have been cut out and redone. There is no doubt the more you do something the better it gets. All the best, Norman

Great job Norman. If we all knew the work needed for our projects at the beginning we would never start. Just as well we don't eh?

I had the same with my son's minor, If I'd realised I'd end up replacing or repairing everything from the jacking point to the roof I would never have started.

My son said to me previously that I have repaired worse than this. I don’t think any of them were this bad and like I said to him “ they were your cars”. Anyhow back to the boot lid repairs. I have ground the welds back on the boot lid skin. They aren’t flush as it’s slightly low along the weld line so will get a skim of filler. I stripped the paint off the skin to see what horrors lay underneath. There were a few rust spots which I have ground back as much as possible. I treated those areas with Hydrate 80, they will get a light sand back tomorrow. The observant amongst you will have noticed most of the rust spots are in a line. This is because there was a piece of chrome trim fitted which has been trapping water and rotting the skin. It’s not going back on so I have welded up the fixing holes. I have decided none of the chrome strips will be refitted. Tomorrow I will give the lid a coat of primer then it will be back to the door bottom repairs. Here are a few pictures showing the progress. I did notice I had an area of the skin where it was oil canning, don’t know if that’s how you describe it but it’s when you can push the metal around and it springs in or out depending on which side you push. Anyhow with a bit of hammer and dolly work it’s stable now. I have noticed a bit of rust around the seams of the boot lid. I will clean this as well as I can and pour a little Hydrate 80 inside the skin and swirl it around. When the boot lid is finished I will pour cavity wax into the edges a swirl that around to hopefully keep the rust at bay. That’s it for today, please feel free to offer advice and suggest a better way of doing things. All the best, Norman

Hi Norman,
I've been sitting silent for a while and have just simply been enjoying your updates. I'm just so pleased you are cracking on with the project, and doing a mighty fine job of it at the the same time. I like what you've done with the garage. Brightening up the place will certainty put you in good stead when it comes to painting. I've recovered the roof in the tent I'm working in as the old one was leaking really badly. Thing is, despite now being more water tight than it ever has been, it now has an awful colour of light on the inside....even with the light on. I just wish I could have fit my truck into my garage....it would have saved a lot of problems. Anyway Norman....that really is some fantastic fabrication work going on there. Your work was always good, but there's a real difference in your later work that shows you've learnt a lot along the way. Keep it up mate....you'll get there soon 👍👍

Norman, if you have a local paint factors then buy a roll of brown masking paper. Its about a metre wide abd saves a lot of time masking as you don't need to tape up joins. it has no pulp in it so you don't get paper fibres in the paint when spraying. It's also good at sucking the overspray down for a better finish.

Hi Mark, I have masking paper on order, I just used what I could lay my hands on. I have been filling the two nearside doors today and still have a way to go. Thanks for all the help and advice you give me. Norman

Hi folks, I am still chipping away at it, I have been working on both nearside doors. I have been skimming them with filler, sanding and filling till I have them near to finishing. Here are a couple of pictures of the progress. The bare metal parts are where I have rubbed through the primer. They have both been primed again in preparation for the final shaping. You can see in these pictures that I have the dreaded orange peel. I thought I was getting the hang of this painting malarkey but evidently not. I don’t know if I am putting too much or not enough paint on. I paint with the same mixing ratio, same air pressure and same tip in the gun. Here are a couple of pictures showing the finish. Well as you can see that’s orange peel, it doesn’t really matter too much at this stage as it will be rubbed back for final stages of filling and shaping. I hope I can find the cause of it long before I attempt any top coats. Please feel free to offer any advice or suggestions. I will now be looking to rehang these doors and get the gaps a little better than they are just now, hopefully without any drama. My wife was asking me today “how much longer do you think it will take you to finish it”. I said I have no idea, she thinks the neighbours will surmise that we don’t get on due to the amount of time I spend in the garage. It will take as long as it takes. All the best for now, Norman

Hi Norman, I really wouldn't worry about the finish you are getting with primer. Let the primer do it's 'thing' and when the time comes, practice/test the top coat on a scrap piece of metal or something. Primer sprays and lays much differently to top coat. I have a selection of spray guns. Two of them, with larger nozzles, are dedicated to high build primer applications. They always orange peel. I just let the finish cure thoroughly ( about a week ) and knock it back to a smooth finish. Don't get me wrong....a finishing gun will still need setting up properly to achieve a good top coat finish, but it will deliver a better finish all round with a smaller/finer nozzle etc. Plus, don't forget that most paint jobs need cutting and polishing once they're done....it's only in a proper spray booth with all the luxuries of heat and dust control that you might get away with it. There's nothing really wrong with what your doing at this point of the process. It all looks good to me 👍🏻 Dan.
